scanners for B&W (digest #2388)

I've tried making contact sheets on my flatbed Epson 2450 - and they're
terrible. If you don't develop yourself, it's worth a few bucks to have the lab
make the contact sheet. I am very satisfied with the Minolta 5400 for film and
slides - although it's slow. My best results with B&W film have been with the
chromogenics - Kodak T400CN or Ilford Super XP2. Good luck,
            Arlene

I need to second this. The original reason I started doing any wet
printing at all was the infeasability of worthwhile contact sheets on
the 2450. And batch scanning a 36 exposure roll tended to take me about
an hour per contact sheet, all told, which compared poorly to what I
could do in a couple of minutes optically.

If the 4870 is markedly better here I'll have to pick one up.

Graham
