Quadtone RIP for WinXP: "Some level of networking" Question

Quadtone RIP for WinXP: "Some level of networking" Question

2004-08-10 by slalred

I'm running WinXP Home Edition on my PC, and my ignorance of
networking is profound. After installing the Quadtone software I have
encounted the network error mentioned in the documentation [excerpt
below) -- there seem to be no entries in my network tables (whatever
that means).

I ran the networking "wizard" and encountered no errors configuring my
system as a "network", and was able to share my printer, etc.

So, finally, my question: What is the definition of the "level of
networking" I need to run the product? I'm not even sure if my PC
came with networking capability (i.e. a network card). How do I tell?
What kind of network card would I need (besides being a cheap one)?

Thanks,

Steve Alred

Excerpt form Quadtone installation Readme:

" If you have difficulty there are several helpful pieces on
information.

The first is the command screen that comes up. The most likely
error is at a line: net use lpt3 \\computername\Quad2200
An error such as 1231 after is a network problem. Although QTR
defaults to the current machine some of the networks tables seem
to be required. (If there are any Windows experts who know how
to get rid if this I'd like to know)."

I'm not sure if this helps, but I found that with QTR I could not
print unless I was online -- i.e., connected to the Internet. Once I
disconnected, printing would stop within about a minute. If I tried
to start printing without being online I would get the error message
you're referring to.

Hi Steve,

The networking issue is a real pain. I wish I knew the definitive
answer. The main problem is outputing to a usb port. The standard
i/o allows lpt output but not usb. This little network sharing work-around
is all that I've found so far. I'm trying to find a better solution.

Solved! Re: Quadtone RIP for WinXP: "Some level of networking" Question

2004-08-10 by slalred

Chris,

Your suggestion worked exactly as described. I connected to the
Group to check for messages, saw yours, and since the printer, etc.,
was still set up from yesterday's attempt I gave it a go.

Voila'! A print!

So -- should you find yourself in the Washington, DC, Metro area
drop me a line: I owe you a nice cold beverage! I don't even want
to think about what you went through to uncover this gem.

Thanks,

Steve Alred

Solved! Re: Quadtone RIP for WinXP: "Some level of networking" Question

2004-08-11 by Andrew Unger

I'm following the QTR threads so that I'll be ready when Roy has
4000-Windows enabled. I have a phone connection and really don't
want it to have to be on all the time QTR is printing. It is
possible to set up a one computer network using the Network Wizard.
Select "other" to describe the connection, then "this computer
directly connects to the internet, I don't have a network yet." Go
through the balance of the screens and you should then have your one
computer home network. I'm hoping that simply having the network
created and printer sharing enabled will be enough so that you don't
have to actually be online and thus "networked."

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
