Hahnemuhle White Velvet: opinions? (flaking?)

Hahnemuhle White Velvet: opinions? (flaking?)

2004-08-12 by chipcarterdc

Has anyone used this paper and if so, any thoughts on it? I really liked the
appearance of Epson's Velvet Fine Art, but it the surface would flake off if you
looked at it wrong. How's the White Velvet in terms of flaking? How about
appearance? I'm particularly interested in its D-max (Epson VFA has great D-
max) and texture (VFA had just a wee bit more texture than I wanted for
certain prints).

Also, I went to Shades of Paper's website, but couldn't find it listed under the
Hahnemuhle section. Am I missing it somewhere else on the site?

Try Emailing Jim, I think he has some sizes and not others, and the
website has not yet been updated.
The flaking problem will not go away, all of these prints need to be
dealt with carefully, and the paper brushed or whatever before printed on.
I like the paper, the appearance is much like Velvet Fine Art, it's
ability to take ink is superior like all the H papers. Unlike yours,
my experience with VFA, from the beginning as a beta tester for it
when it was only Somerset Enhanced, is that the D-max is not great,
it's ability to hold a reasonable total ink without mottle is limited,
and the gamut lower than the H papers. Given all that, the right image
on it is beautiful and the surface lovely.
White Velvet, the best description I can come up with is PhotoRag with
a bit more tooth similar to German Etching, and you can get it to
flake like any other paper. A bit thicker would have been nice, or
thickness options.
I intend to work with it more and see if it will be a good option for
William Turner, my other favorite paper.
