Some beautiful B&W images of the Endurance crater dunes came down today at the exploratorium and JPL web sites. Some of these could easily pass as "fine art" landscape images and it is incredible to think that they were taken by a robot on Mars with a 1 MP digital camera. Here is an example: http://tinyurl.com/5enp5 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

They should have cropped it about one inch up from the bottom, burned some of the shadow areas, and dodged the highlights in the center.

Quick question....is it normal for Velvet fine art to print a bit lighter than say Ilford radiant white, or H. german etching, or museo?....all my papers print very clos eto the same on my 1280, with Mis UT2 inks, except for velvert fine art which is lighter in the darkest areas. I have read that VFA has good Dmax, so I am wondering which way to approach it. May an incerase in contrast, or just a darkening of the print?. Trying to conserve paper cuz i dont have much of it.....thanks, DM

The Epson Velvet FA has one of the top dmax numbers with UC: It hits 1.74 on the 2200/MK when Photo Rag only gets 1.63 or so. However, on the 1280 with Ebony, both get the same number. The above numbers are for BO printing and were tested with OPM. For the reccord, the Epson driver set to Matte Heavyweight may produce slightly darker black at 720dpi. Tones other than 100% black are a matter of profile, not paper (except for white). If you have a profile for this paper, it should match any of the other papers as long as they are similarly profiled.
