Most likely, the share name should not have the space in it. Try Quad7600.

The QTR profiles should be someplace like:

C:\Program Files\QuadToneRIP\quadtone\Quad2200\*.quad

If it started the you are piping through to the right place.

If that is the case then it is most likely one of the quad exe's.

You can easily see that by printing to file instead of to the
printer, it will most likely be the second routine quadtoprinter.exe
that dies which of course is still beta.

One way you can see this is to make sure the image is 8bit and not
16bit and drop the resolution or drop the page size to letter.

They're "installed" in the sense that QTR knows where to find them. As far as Windows is concerned, they're an unknown (*.quad) file type. They're really nothing more than a text file with some comments (lines beginning with #) and a "curve" for each ink. The curve is just a list of 256 16-bit numbers that tells QTR for each pixel's gray value (0-255) how much ink to put down (0-65535).

So, in the case of QTR, yes the profile is really just a set of curves. For ICC profiles, the file format among other things are a bit more complicated.

The QTR profiles/curves can be loaded in notepad or word or whatever editor you like. You can cut and past the list of numbers into excel for example and graph them to see what they look like visually.

http://fors.net/temp/qtr.gif

To use the various profiles, you can either edit the Print-2200.bat file in notepad and change the 'set CURVE1=' and 'set CURVE2=' lines to the profiles you want to use. Then change the 'set BLEND=' line to the percentage of CURVE1 you would like to print at. With BLEND=50, QTR just averages CURVE1 and CURVE2 when it prints.

Another easier way to do this would be to download Stephen Billard's QTRgui program.

http://sbillard.org/Shareware/QTRgui.htm

It allows you to select the curves and other settings in the familiar windows GUI fashion and acts as a front-end to QTR.

I agree. I don't like to change inks either, but I normally prefer matte papers and only switch to photo black ink when doing digital negatives.

Can't help you with the stopped printer. No idea.

There are no profiles per se for QuadToneRIP, just curves that are in the
QuadTone folder.

Re: QTR Printing Question

2004-08-18 by gphilpott2003

Hi,
I just wanted to chime in on the issue of swapping matte and photo
black ink on 9600 and 7600. In case everyone here doesn't know how
to change the inks with minimal waste. I have done this several
times and I believe it costs aprox $10 in ink and paper to do.
1 - printer is not switched on
2 - open the ink lever
3 - replace the photo black with the matte black cart
4 - leave the ink lever open !
5 - go into Maintenance Mode 2 by by switching power ON while pushing
the 'Paper source', 'Cut/Eject', and 'Paper Feed down' buttons.
6 - press the 'Paper Feed down' button until you see "SERVICE CONFIG"
on the display - press the 'arrow right' button (not Enter!). It than
shows 'XXD' in the lower part of the display.
7 - press the 'Paper Feed down' button until you see "NPD" -
press 'arrow right' button (not 'Enter'!). A value '1' appears in the
display.
8 - there are 3 possible settings for NPD:
0 - no ink check
1 - pigmented ink (there should be s star "*" at this
setting)
2 - dye inks
9 - change NPD setting to '0' (no ink check) and press "Enter" - a
star should show now next to the '0'
10 - switch printer off
11 - switch printer on
12 - close the ink lever
13 - printer and driver shows matte black
For the 9600 I create a solid black image in PS 23x53 inches and
print on cheap matte paper at 720dpi. This only takes a few
minutes. You can see where the matte black ink starts on the page.
I believe the ink wasted is aprox 20-22 ml which cost about $8 and
the paper will cost about $2.50 or so. I have done this several
times and see no ill effect to the printer. The cartridge chips
still read correctly and the ink usage is still monitored. I
printed out these instructions and keep them near the printer. The
swap takes very little time to do.
I post this just in case someone is still wasting $100 worth of ink
on the swaps.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been waiting a long time for
this info.Ijust knew if I switched the hard way, a few days later

Re: [Digital BW] RE: QTR Printing Question

2004-09-17 by Peter

I have carefully installed QTR for WinXP Home but I am unable to make a
print. I am using an Epson 7600.

I think that I have successfully dragged a file to the Print-7600.bat icon.
I say this because when I do so a dialogue page flashes on the screen.
However, that dialogue box comes and goes so quickly that it is unreadable.

When the Print-7600.bat icon is opened, the bottom lines read as follows:
    >cmd /c "C:\Program Files\QuadToneRIP\bin\quadtoneprint

    >if Not DEFINED PRINTER (go to badprinter)

    >if NOT DEFINED FILE (go to badfile)

    >echo No print file specified
    No print file specified

    >go to done

    >pause
    Press any key to continue...

I have doubled checked to make sure that the print sharing feature was
properly done and the Share name "Quad 7600" is in the Share name box.

Too, I cannot find where the profiles have been installed. I have looked at
the appropriate file in Windows for the profiles but they are not there.

I would appreciate any help with solving these issues.

Thanks in advance,

Stephen--there was a space between Quad and 7600, which I have corrected.
The file started to print but has stopped after only printing about 5% of
the page. The printer has stopped printing and has been in that limbo
position for several minutes. What could have stopped the 7600 from
printing?

I still can't find the profiles in Windows>System 32>Spool>drivers>color
folder. Where are these and how are they chosen?

Thanks for the printer name clue.

Thanks Tom--

I have found the "profiles" folder but they don't have an "install" icon
that I am used to seeing. Notwithstanding that, are the profiles installed?
If so, how can I use them? Are "curves", which is often referred to, another
word for profiles?

I have been successful in finally getting a b&w print but it has no "snap".
No doubt that is because it is printed on Epson's Enhanced Matte with Photo
Black ink. It is just too expensive and time consuming to change to matte
black ink for these trials.

Thanks again Tom--

You have been a great help, which I very much appreciate.

I have installed SB's QTRgui program but have not had the time to use it. It
looks like a fairly steep learning curve for me. Still I will give it a good
try. This should be fun!

In addition to my 7600 I have a 2200 but it is at my house in Florida. I
will be there later this week and am looking forward to using QTR to make
some prints with the EEM/ matte black ink combo. I think there is a 4000 in
my very near future.

Thanks! I couldn't figure out what caused the printer to stop. I rebooted
