QTRgui newbie question

QTRgui newbie question

2004-08-17 by zonepeter

I think I must be missing the perfectly obvious. I have downloaded
QTR and QTRgui and am trying to print. I have also downlaoded the
set of curves for the 1280UT2 to the quadtone file in QTR. I have my
printer shared, but not networked. When I open QTRgui, it shows the
curves listed in the printing model box and nothing in the curve
box. Obvioulsy when I try to print just to see if I can, I get
the "no curve selected" warning. Can anyone suggest what I might be
doing wrong? What should show in the printing model box? (I would
have thought the printer ID) Do I have the curves in the wrong file?

I'm sure this is just a computer idiot trying to figure out some very
basic stuff. I have reviewed all the posts and haven't found my
answer yet. I'm sure I will have other simple questions
Thanks for the help.

It isn't quite as clear as it might be. There are a few things you
have to watch out for:

First, you have to make your single computer emulate a network. Do
this by following the procedure in:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=236869. That's all you have to do
there.

Second, you have to make sure your files are all in the right places.
According to Stephen Billard, be sure your executable (.exe) files are
in a folder named (typically) c:\program files\QuadToneRIP\bin
and put the curves similarly in
c:\program files\QuadToneRIP\quadtone\<printer>. Where <printer> is
the printer curves you installed: get the path exactly right. You can
change the partition the files are installed in, but I suggest that
you stick to the preferred location that is installed and switch
later, if needed (don't delete the originals until your sure the moved
files work).

Third, QTR3 for Windows seems to be sticky about image sizes vs page
sizes. I have found that setting an image to exactly 13x19 for SuperB
paper doesn't work. Setting the full image size to no more than about
12.5x18.5 printed fine. You may be able to cut it closer than that,
but I don't need to, so I haven't shaved it any further.

Fourth, You can only drop the image file onto the *UNOPENED* .bat file
(to test if your problem is the GUI or the QTR3 script) and you can't
use a shortcut for the GUI (apparently; I can't, anyway). Open the GUI
from the original location, if you use it (and I do recommend it, it
makes changing things like paper size and tonality very easy).

Finally, did you click on the menu drop-down buttons alongside the
curves boxes? If that's blank, you don't have your curves in the right
folder location, see above.

Re: QTRgui newbie question

Frank and all,
Thanks for the quick response.
I created the loopback. It says it was successfully installed. The
files all seem to be where they belong. I believe all the exe files
are in the bin file and the curves appear to be in the quadtone
file. When I open QTRgui, I still get the 1280 curves listed in the
printing model box (is this correct?) and the curve dropdowns are
empty.
I have not been able to figure out how to print in QTR without gui.
I would prefer to use gui anyway.
Thank you so much for the help. I suspect I may need more advice
(QTR for dummies!!!)

RE: [Digital BW] QTRgui newbie question

2004-08-18 by Stephen Billard

The printing model box should show "quad1280". Sounds like the folders for
QuadToneRIP are messed up. Did you use the batch files to install
everything? Did you place QTRgui.exe in the "bin" file?

RE: [Digital BW] Re: QTRgui newbie question

2004-08-18 by Stephen Billard

About the only way I can see this happening is if you don't have the folder
"Quad1280" in the QuadTone folder--just the profiles directly in the
QuadTone folder.

Best advice I can give is:

Clean up all the folders and start over.

Use the QuadToneRIP batch files to do the installing of QuadToneRIP. Then
copy QTRgui.exe into the "bin" file. (Or download the current version which
comes with a setup file which will insist on the file structure being
correct before it will install.)

[Digital BW] Re: QTRgui newbie question/Success!!

2004-08-18 by zonepeter

Frank, Steven and Group,
I unistalled everything and started over. Probably a bit more
attention to detail, and bingo...have been able to print the 21 step
wedge.
Tomorrow I'll try printing pictures with QTR.
Thank you soooo much for the help and support.
I'm sure I'll be back with other stupid questions.
Will report results as well.

Peter
