You don't have to have a "digital look." I don't have your ink or scanner so can't comment on the other stuff. I do use a 1160 and have no problem with that.

Good luck,

Subject: [Digital BW] blotchy blacks on MIS quadtone

hi. i'm pretty new to digital phtotgraphy and printing. i've recently
set up a digital darkroom (nikon sc 4000, epson 1160, MIS FS quadtone
inks). I'm printing portraits from tibet and the true black just does
not blend in. the prints have a great tonal spectrum in the
highlights and midtones, but when it comes to the shadows, the black
blotches up and pixelates - looking very digital. am i doing
something wrong? or is this just what i should expect with digital
  prints?
  thanks so much,
  dafna.

Paper and workflow information would definitely help.

If you are using the Woolf (non-Piezo) workflow, try converting the image to
RGB before applying the adjustment curve. When you apply the adjustment
curve, alter it by going into the individual colors of the dialogue box.
Pull the green curve up slightly and push the blue curve down an equal
amount.

The point of this is to use the 24 bit mode and put the lines at different
points to smooth out the transition. I'm not a fan of 8-bit adjustments (or
the non-partitioning workflow if a 4-ink printer is being used) because they
result in more visible artifacts.
