Lyson Daylight Digital Darkroom

Lyson Daylight Digital Darkroom

2004-08-28 by Carl Schofield

Looks like this has been or will shortly be released for the 2200/7600
printers. There is a link on the following web site to a pdf
description of the system (software, inks, papers). They don't say
specifically what the 7 inks are, but it appears as though they might
be the quad blacks (neutral or warm?) plus C, M , and Y inks for
toning. Perhaps Antonis can elaborate on the composition of this
inkset.

Carl,

I don't know officially what's in the kit, but it should be neutral quads
plus small gamuts. Not sure if it includes the dilute small gamuts or
the full strength. It's the only way to deal with the metamerism of the
quads, and not have bright colors to profile or show dots. Should
work fine on newer machines as far as highlight dots go, but
with 7000 - type heads may not be as smooth depending on profiling.
Of course, they are marketing the kit to 7-ink printers, so that's not
an issue.

The official release came out 8/19/04. You can read it at dp&i:

(scroll down)

I expect that they will ship the kit with profiles for the Darkroom Glossy
which should make life easier for anyone new to profiling - especially
with three toners.

Antonis,

Thanks for the info on the inks. Using toners to generate warm/cool
profiles shouldn't be too difficult, but trying to eliminate metamerism
with the small gamut toners sounds like it might be more challenging.
Have you been able to generate neutral prints without metamerism?
Also, can you produce a good sepia with this inkset or would it be
necessary to substitute the warm quads (plus some small gamut M and Y)
for this?

[Digital BW] Re: Lyson Daylight Digital Darkroom

Carl,

I haven't played with that particular inkset enough to know. I was
mostly involved in beta testing previous candidates. But from
what I've seen in experiments conducted by others, if the
grayscale is largely made up of the small gamuts with some
quads added, spectral graphs begin to flatten out quite a bit -
meaning they don't show the peaks often associated with
metameric grays.
And I would think that a good sepia should be possible - just
haven't done it myself.
