Glossy UT prints

Glossy UT prints

2004-08-30 by Stephen Kobrin

I tried printing on glossy paper for the first time using UT inks, a
1280 and Epson's premium glossy paper. Using the carbon curves for
Eboni black, the glossy print is a bit darker and there is some loss
of detail in very dark areas. (The difference can be seen across the
entire tonal range.) To this point, I have only printed on matte
paper (my comparison in this case is EEM) and I am not sure what
conclusion to draw. Is this a normal artifact of glossy paper, in
which case it would be easy enough to apply a final curve to lighten
the image.

I am using Paul Roark's curves rather than the sliders.

Steve,

I try to make the curves to the same 50% density value and then roll off the
shadow tones from 70% or 75% to black to get even steps to the various
dmaxs. So, if a curve is printing darker overall, it's not intentional.

My observation was that the Premium SemiGloss curves worked well on Premium
Glossy and Premium Luster (but not Premium SemiMatte). I may not have
checked every combination of curve and paper, however.

If you use the Premium Semigloss curve (UT2-PermSemiGloss ...), what value
does the 50% patch match if you hold a test strip next to one done on, for
example, EEM?

Paul,

I used Epson premium glossy with the appropriate curve and set the
paper type to the same. I compared it to the identical print on eem
with the appropriate curve. I will run two test test strips tonight
and let you know. Thanks,

Steve

Set the paper type to "Photo Paper." That is the default paper type for all
papers with UT2 unless stated otherwise in the information sheet.

Paul,

That was it. To my eye, the tones in the two prints are identical.

Thanks,
