Can you dry mount Ink Prints or will I make a mess of my prints and my press? Many thanks to everyone who had so graciously taken the time to answer my questions. I really appreciate it. Please forgive me if I forgot to thank you personally. Yaakov Asher Sinclair

I do use a release paper over all my prints when dry mounting.

Yaakov, I dry mount my larger prints (larger than 12x18) because I've found large prints will not lie flat. For smaller prints I prefer hinge mounting. I use a Seal 210 and BufferMount tissue that only requires a relatively low temperature (around 170F) and actually bonds when it cools. That also makes it removeable if necessary (although I've never tried that and hope I never have to). Since I started using the heavier papers such as Photo Rag, I've pretty much
discontinued dry mounting for inkjet (dry mounting works fine with inkjet
prints, by the way -- just use a layer of museum board over the surface, as
you would do dry mounting a silver print). With Photo Rag I can use the
Light Impressions photo corners directly on archival foam board, instead of
dry-mounting on museum board, cut a window matt and I'm done in just a few
minutes and the print is ready to frame. I don't print very large, about
10x15" or so image size, and at that size the paper lies very flat.

It is definitely not a conservation method since it cannot be undone without damage to the print. As long as I am framing with a mat I hinge mount. I recently did some research on mounting techniques for a newsletter: http://www.framedestination.com/newsletter_01.html#mounting Mark Rogers Frame Destination, Inc.

Since my photographs are not exactly priceless works of art, I do not use the wheat or rice starch adhesives. Instead, I use Lineco (http://www.lineco.com) Self Adhesive tissue. It is just like using regular tape except you have to peal a backing off. It is acid/lignin-free and very convenient. I have been thinking about offering it is an accessory for my frames. Instead, I use Lineco > (http://www.lineco.com) Self Adhesive tissue. This was also Lineco, but it was the gummed linen tape. You peel off a backing, but then you have to wet it. I'll have to look for the Self Adhesive. The Darkroom Gloss paper I'm using now, while not as heavy as some of the matte papers, is nevertheless nicely stiff, and would probably be a good candidate for that kind of mounting, although I haven't printed on anything larger than A3 yet. > > James [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
