QTR Mac - devil in the details

QTR Mac - devil in the details

2004-09-13 by James Haney

This is a bit off-topic but anyone on this list using QTR on an up to
date Mac is probably having the same issues.

On the Mac using Panther 10.3.5, QTR - UT7

1 - Using QTR requires CUPS drivers

2 - Using CUPS drivers disables the ability to use EPSON USB

3 - Thereby forcing you to use CUPS for all of your printing needs.

4 - While my QTR prints on my 2200 look great, my color prints on the
other 2200 look bad.

5 - Does anyone know how to:

A - Get CUPS and Epson USB drivers to co-exist so I can use both?

B - Get the CUPS/GIMP drivers to print a good color image on EEM and
PhotoRag?

Strangely enough, I bought a 7600 last week and after combination of
efforts was able to get it working with the standard Epson drivers but
I cannot seem to get the same to work for the 2200.

I have tried bypassing this entire situation by using

A - EZ workflow with UT7 with Epson Driver - I find the dots to be too
evident

B - Rourke curves and RGB workflow and Epson Driver - works but
annoying workflow - only works in Image editor

Summary,

I really want to use QTR due to superior quality (in my experience),
total control, and ability to print from any application. But I have to
be able to print in color as well.

Help.

I have both the Epson USB driver and QTR working fine alongside each other
on my new G5 2x2.5Ghz, OS-X 10.3.5. I have not had any problems and have
not had to do anything special to have them co-exist.

I am very jealous!

Apparently this is a known issue. I am surprised that you are problem
free.

When I call Epson they say that it is a known issue and the solution is
to:

A - Re-install the system software with the "Erase Disk" option and not
install any Apple supplied drivers- No kidding they actually said that!

B - De-install the GIMP drivers. - which obviously disables QTR.

I have a theory that if the EPSON USB printers are pre-defined before
the GIMP drivers are installed that things will be OK and that the real
problem is that the GIMP software disables the ability of the Printer
Setup Utility to discover Epson USB devices.

I will try this tonight.

OK now you have me worried. I simply added the printers via Printer Setup
Utility. Perhaps I did this a little too hastily. In Printer Setup Utility
do you not have the ability to select Epson USB under the drop down menu
(not USB)?

Assuming mine are ok I think your hunch may be right - I definitely set up
the Epson USB printers and then installed QTR. I can see that if I select
USB rather than Epson USB then I would be setting up a printer to run with
CUPS-Gimp Print, but mine are definitely set up by selecting Epson USB
instead.

Re: [Digital BW] QTR Mac - devil in the details

2004-09-13 by James Haney

Steve,

What happens is this: I go to the Printer Setup Utility and select
Epson USB and there are no printers there.

Once I uninstall every printer driver on my Mac and re-install the
Epson Supplied drivers things work again.

I am going to approach this in a very systematic way tonight and see if
I can figure out how to get it all working.

If you go to the Printer Setup Utility on your machine right now, click
"Add" and select Epson USB, do you see your printer? (make sure it is
on).

Thanks,

James

Yes I do see it after a slight pause. I think the only difference between
us is that I have a 2100 and am using Epson UK's latest 2100 driver. But
Printer Setup Utility can see the printer.

Is the printer on a hub? Try pluging directly into the Mac.

A friend of mine with the latest OS X, Epson 2200 and QTR working flawlessly...for color
and black and white.

John,

Thanks for chiming in.

I tried it in the motherboard USB ports, in a USB card. I tried taking
the USB card out of the Mac in case that was the problem. I tired
Firewire. All have the same issue. I can only set them up with CUPS
drivers.

I will try again tonight and carefully track the process.

Re: [Digital BW] QTR Mac - devil in the details

2004-09-14 by James Haney

As an update to anyone following this thread.

I used a utility called "Printer Setup Repair" from fixamac.net to
basically delete anything resembling a printer driver or preference on
my computer and repair permissions on various directories and files.

I then re-installed the latest 2200 driver from Epson and the 7600
drivers from CD.

I re-booted and everything seems to be working fine.

I haven't checked to ensure that QTR works properly, but I was able to
add a CUPS/GIMP driver setup for QTR without disabling any of the Epson
printers.

So far, so good.

As near as I can tell it all has to do with the order of installations.
