Framing with "almost" no mat

Framing with "almost" no mat

2004-09-18 by Arthur Fink

I've got a number of 17 x 22 images that I'd like to frame with the
appearance of having no mat. (They are black & white enlarged contact
sheets, and I like the feeling of having the black image blend directly
into the black frame.)

Of course, there must be some kind of spacer, so that the glass is not
directly in contact with the paper. Perhaps there could be some kind of
gasket ... or a special extrusion instead of the Nielsen #11 moulding that
I typically would use.

Any ideas? Any experience?

Thanks much,

Arthur Fink

Check catalogues from places like Light Impressions or University Products.
They sell strips of spacer material that can be inserted between a mat/print
and the edge of the frame's channel.

Light Impressions (and certainly others) sells strips of clear vinyl
spacers. They have an adhesive on one side so they can be held in place on
the glazing. They come in various depths.

The spacer sold by Light Impressions is the least expensive in Frametek's
line. They have others that might be of interest. We've been using the
Framespace and love the results.

And, what is the issue with putting a "thoroughly dried" ink jet print directly against the glazing, especially if it were sprayed with the likes of Priemer spray? It doesn't have the same properties as the wet darkroom print that would adhere to the glazing.

Oh yes for float mounting any good frame shop or framing supply will have acrylic spacer
strips in stock. What you do is attach the acrylic spacer strips to the plexi or glass with the
adhesive that they come coated with ( peel off ) . Then you have a space between the print
and the glass so that the glass doesn't touch the print. I did a whole exhibition like this for
graduate school where I had burned black edges around the silver composite prints and
framed in black frames. Some people even use a very thick moulding, like used for
framing paintings, for the frame to put even more space there. They make different
thickness of the acrylic strips for this. One thing to remember though, if you don't have an
over matte and your print is large it can sometimes buckle a little bit unless it is mounted
somehow. With prints up to 16x20 I don't think it would be an issue at all except under
very humid conditions. Having said that I've seen plenty of "floated" prints in museums
and galleries that are not completely flat. I guess it depends on the character of the work
and how perfect you want the flatness. I never had to drymount my 16x20's or even 20x24
silver prints and an occasional wavy thing going on didn't bother me.

Tom--

One issue is that it creates a perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew.
Spacers allow the print (art work) to breathe.

Re: [Digital BW] Framing with "almost" no mat

2004-09-18 by michaellwade

Tom:

Just experienced this with, admittedly, glossy color prints mounted
in contact with the glass.

Any irregularity in the backing board that presses a small area of
the print tightly against the glass will produce a noticeable "wet
spot" look, as though there was a drop of moisture between the print
and the glass. You can produce the effect temporarily by pressing on
the backing board, which is how I discovered what the problem was.

Many thanks to the contributors of the info on Frametek spacers,
which I found on framingsupplies.com at the best price.

Arthur,
I deal with Metropolitan frames in Minneapolis Metropolitan Framing. They are
a great outfit. Their prices are great also. For your specific need you will
probably need to call them, but they will have what you need.

Re: Framing with "almost" no mat

2004-09-18 by Jerry Hadam

Arthur,
Spacers come in all kinds and sizes and replicate the true job of the
mat which is to keep the glazing off of the print. The kind I use
mostly are 1/8 or 1/4 inch deep, hollow plastic (clear or black) and
have a self adhesive strip on one side that you put on the glass or the
edge of the frame (wood) depending on...
I have never tried to put them in a metal frame but with a deeper
profile you could adhere them to the glass, use some artists tape on
the edge to secure the whole package and then slide it in.
Profile 12 is has the same face as 11 but is 1" deep overall with the
opening inside being 19/32 as opposed to 11 13/32. If you need more
space the 22 has a 5/16 face with the overall depth 1 13/32 inside (art
space ) of 1 inch.
The spacers come from a variety of sources and they are known by names
like econospace, rabbet space, channel space etc. . If you have other
questions please contact me off the list too as I don't get to read
every digest.
Good luck,
Jerry
