1280, 1290 & 1270 Monotone UT-FS inksets

I tried loading my 1280 with the UT-FS with a CMCMY ink configuration, and it works very well. With no curve or adjustment at all it prints one step light at 50%. (The 50% target density is at 55%.) But with a very mild curve, that can be loaded as a Transfer Function in the Epson driver, the output is nearly perfect. With dark gray (FS-C) in both the C & M spots, the ink configuration can print on glossy paper even with Eboni left in. The file needs to be converted to RGB. Then the blue curve is used to turn the light gray off in the deep shadows so that no Eboni is ever used. The other curve points are all on the combined RGB curve so that adjusting the curve to different papers is every easy. The Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl dmax is 2.19 with this arrangement. The dmax on Epson Glossy Photo paper is modest at 1.74. Of course, Photo K will give a better dmax and print with a grayscale file. I believe the 1270 and 1290 will work the same way with this ink arrangement. The big advantage to this setup is that for those who want to keep it simple yet have control of the inkset, the curves are so easy to adjust, even visually, that profiling any type of paper should be very easy for everyone. The UT-FSN, of course, gives a neutral tone, whereas FS is medium warm (not pure carbon). With this number of printers - 1280, 1270, 1290 & 2000P - all able to use the same ink arrangement and cartridges, I suspect MIS will pre-load this setup. So, this is another option for those who want the simplest, smoothest B&W prints. Paul www.PaulRoark.com <http://www.paulroark.com/> [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
