QTR on Mac OSX will not print

QTR on Mac OSX will not print

2004-09-20 by bwbonkers

Help!!!
This is driving me mad. I have installed Roys QTR on a Mac running
OSX 10.3.4 connected via USB to Epson 2100. Software loaded and
curves installed. All looks good. However when I try to print I get
nothing!! Printing dialogue gives 'Starting Job' then 'Printing page
1, 0%' then after a few minutes file disappears with 'No Job
Printing'. Sometimes the print dialogue says 'Sending print file' and
then nothing. Printer works fine with Epson driver.

Any ideas.

In Printer Setup, what does it say next to the Quad2200 (or whatever you
called it) printer?

Hi Steve
Quad2100 is what I called the printer and under kind is says 'EPSON
Stylus Photo 2100, CUPS+Gimp-Print v 4.2.5 QuadToneRIP 2.0'

Hope you can see the problem.

OK that's good. Download Printer Setup Repair and run it through to repair
your permissions and any CUPS problems. Hopefully that will do the trick.
Just out of interest, what inks are you using? Epson UCs with Matt Black?

Also, I assume that you changed all the curve text files to include the
right printer name and reran Run Quad Profile? (If I recall correctly the
downloaded curves use Quad2200)

Yes I did. The curves show up in the print driver. However I will
double check. There was also an easy install script for the 2100,
which I ran to create and install the files.

Ok then it sounds like a permissions issue. I suspect Printer Setup Repair
will do the trick.

Update

Reloaded printer this time using Epson instead of QuadtoneRIP to
install a gimp driver printer only. This I have just checked and
works. So Epson and gimp driver printers work. I must be doing
something stupid but for the life of me I cannot see it.

I've run across this problem several times.

First of all, make sure that you are not printing using the highest 2880 dpi setting with OS
X and Quadtone RIP. It will not will not work. You will see the "printing...." prompt just as
you described, but nothing will come out of the printer. This is a known issue, I believe.

Otherwise, you should uninstall the software and make sure that there are no backed up
spool files. (Sorry, I'm not near my computer right now and can't tell you what the path is
to these files-- try Googling it.)

Also-- Quadtone RIP behaves somewhat erratically if you go into ANY of the other areas in
the Print Dialog box (such as Manual Feed settings, Scheduled Print, etc.) When I print with
QTR I make a bee-line straight for the "QuadTone RIP Settings" windoid and click print. I
know this sounds like voodoo but I think this is a known issue. Perhaps Roy could
comment further.

Hope this helps.

This is all good advice. The Paper Feed dialog is the main culprit. Just
entering that dialog page can set an incorrect value that will dump the
print job -- seems to happen to some people not others. Just avoid
the dialog page and if you have a Preset with the same problem, delete and
recreate it.

The othe main issue is using Custom Paper Sizes in Jaguar. Some sizes fail
and some are OK, there's no obvious pattern. In Panther this works just fine.

BINGO!!!!!!

I have spent all day trying to get this to work and the reason it
did'nt was I had set the highest dpi setting of 2880. Set the 1440
and guess what it works. Thank you for your help. Known issues !! Are
these listed anywhere? It would save a lot of pain for someone like
myself trying the software for the first time.

Once again a big thank you.

No problem Steve. Thanks for your help. As I mentioned in a previous
post is there a list of know issues anywhere that could help a newbee
like me. Could take the pain out of learning a new system. On a
postive note I have successfully printed a warm and cool B&W to
compare and like what I see. Looks very promising and no metamerism !!

Back to trawling though the archives .....

I don't think there is a list but it would be useful if Roy collated one. I
think you are well on your way. I had not heard of the non-Printer Features
issues. Most of the issues people face from the point you are at now are
related to an inability to soft-proof. If you do have a Gretag Eye-One then
I would suggest that you go through the instructions to set up soft proofs
as this will save you an immense amount of trial and error.
