OT -- Art Buying Scam
2004-10-18 by Paul Roark
Assume any order from Nigeria is a fraud. I received an e-mail order and had several e-mail exchanges with an individual in Nigeria. For some reason he claimed PayPal was not available in Nigeria. He wanted to use "his" credit card. He send the information and the card charges went through the system normally. However, I was suspicious and found that there are an increasing number of art sales to Nigeria where the card turns out to have not belonged to the person over there. They apparently use a good card belonging to someone who is totally unaware that there is a problem. The transaction goes through; the Nigerian gets the art; the real owner disputes the charge; the card company charges back the money to you; and the con man in Nigeria has the art, which is re-sold (or whatever). You, of course, lose not only the sale but the considerable expenses to ship the product. I found that the card processing company could get me to the telephone number for the issuing bank, which could then compare the card number with the purchaser's name - and they didn't match. So, beware. (Luckily I had not shipped any product.) Paul www.PaulRoark.com <http://www.paulroark.com/> [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
