Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Without Obs

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Without Obs

2004-11-02 by john dean

I thought there was going to be a Photo Rag coming out that didn't have optical
brighteners, closer to German Etching but 100% rag. That didn't happen did it?

Now we have H. Velvet White with even more obs? Right? How does that look. I guess with
some inksets it could provide a cooler color with pigment quads.

Thanks Jim,

I didn't know about your company until Tyler and John mentioned your site. I went there
and like what I see. So, I'm going to try using you for my rag media needs. I like the idea of
a place that specializes in paper and experiments with new things. Do you recomend any
paraticular spray for reducing the scuffing of the Hahnemuhle papers. I loose about one
print a month due to that.

best,

john

2004-11-02 by Jim Doyle

John,

Wow what a tough and loaded question..Most sprays are UV inhibitors.. My
suggestion is an interleaf ..archival of course.. Scuffing is a problem
Whenever people handle them.. Books are the toughest..I have tried them all
at one time or another..I just haven't found the ultimate solution..Maybe
some of you book makers can suggest something..

Cheers

I'm very interested in the book issue, since I want to produce
some of my work. Could I get your current thoughts on papers
that would be appropriate for a book? Obviously B&W, but colour
as well...

Thanks
Robert

RE: [Digital BW] re: new Photo Rag coming soon

2004-11-03 by Jim Doyle

Robert,

Ok some of my thoughts but as you know these are my Thoughts I'm Sure some
on the list will help out!

I have several colleges that are customers one of these has a requirement of
a book.. they print edit and bind the book for the final grade.
At this school this semester they made a real large purchase of 13 x 19
Lumijet Double Sided Matte & a small purchase of Photo Rag Duo 196

The professor came by to meet with me and I saw some of his students work
from Last semester! Just awesome The Lumijet Matte held up real well..Than I
saw the Photo Rag Books. The Photo Rag Books were excellent But I also
Noticed that he handled them with much care. He did note to me that all of
the page were sprayed with the Lumijet Spray Bound by Hand..ect..Just an
overall better presentation..

So we started to talk about the paper selection process.. He Stated That He
Had Tried in the last three semesters just about every paper on the market
that we talk about here in the group and he lets the students decided which
to use..The Last two semesters I have been lucky enough to be the supplier..

Today there is a great choice of papers and I can only offer the reports on
the ones that I carry.. As for the others I guess you would have to try
them..as I usually can only tell you I know what they feel like and look
like ..Time is my issue and I don't have enough of it to test them all out..
Not yet anyway.. Someday soon!

Well That's My Book Double Sided..LOLO If you want to talk me feel free to
call me anytime..

Best of Luck
Jim Doyle

Very interesting. So far, the only site I've found which comments
is fastback:
  http://www.fastbackbooks.com/inkjetpapers.htm
who state that
o use matte instead of glossy for ease of binding
o don't use OB, including EEM
 o use < 205gsm

they recommend
 - PremierArt Matte Scrapbook Photo Paper for Epson
 - Ilford Galerie Multi Purpose InkJet Paper
 - Ilford Galerie Smooth Heavyweight Paper
 - Lumijet Portfolio Series Double-Sided Matte

---

I found some comments on Mitsubishi papers as well (can't find
the positive comments but the paper is at:
  http://www.camcor.com/cgi-bin/bcatalog.cgi/area=dig&id=1048609354
and
  http://www.inkjetart.com/photo_papers/mitsubishi.html
  - Mitsubishi Diamond Jet Dual-Sided Matte

I notice Ilford has a couple of new Smooth that look possible:
 - Smooth Heavyweight Matte DS

http://www.ilford.com/html/us_english/prod_html/galerie/htm/prod/hwm.htm
 - and for the gloss, single-sided fans, Smooth High Gloss

http://www.ilford.com/html/us_english/prod_html/galerie/htm/prod/shg.htm

Unfortunately, getting hold of any of these from Australia seems hard
:-(

Thanks
Robert

Hahnemuhle and Lumijet Papers - The same?

2004-11-03 by john dean

I was under the impression that Lumijet rag media was just Hahnemuhle
with their name on it and a price increase.

If this is NOT true what is the difference. Does Lumijet purchase
paper from Hahnemuhle and then coat it themselves. If so does their
dual sided rag hold up better?

Re: [Digital BW] Hahnemuhle and Lumijet Papers - The same?

2004-11-03 by john dean

Well, is the Lumijet rag actually made by Hahnemuhle? I have also heard that the Lumijet
print spray is actully repackaged Lyson Printguard with an additonal $2.00 price ( and
label) attached to it. I also heard that the Luminos quad inks were the same, Lyson quads
with Lumijet labels ( and price increaseses ) attached.

If this true why do we fall for this.
