As Roy points out, soft proofing is a Photoshop feature ("Proof
Colors..."). Soft proofing relies on profiles that provide accurate
forward and reverse conversions.
I use soft proofing all the time with good results, but I build my own
custom profiles with a spectrophotometer. This may be what it takes to
make it work well enough to rely upon.
The good news, Stephen, is you really shouldn't have to build anything.
