Many thanks for the many suggestions to fix my utterly-hosed 2200.
I THINK the problem came after I upgraded to Panther and installed
QTR before getting my Epson ducks in a row.  Fixing it involved
deleting all the Epson drivers, running permission repair (under
Applications->Utilities), and then re-installing the Epson drivers
(downloading the latest one from their website).

I'm now ready to re-install QTR, the latest 2.1 one.  When I added
the Epson in Printer Setup Utility, I did the trick of adding two
versions, with the MK and PK cartridges installed.  

Question: does it make sense to do the same trick when adding the
QTR printers ?  And how does this interact with the various profiles
that came with the QTR 2.1 download ?  Some of them seem to be
prefixed 'UCpk' or 'UCmk', and some just 'UC'.  Also, if I get the
UT inksets, do I need to add yet another QTR printer, or simply
load the right cartridges and use one of the appropriate profiles ?
(It seems like the printer is doing too much thinking for us; I'd
rather be responsible for making sure the ink-load and profile
make sense together !).

Hi John,

I tend to agree with you about "printer (driver) is doing too much thinking".
With QTR there is no reason to put multiple versions of the driver.
The profiles are all made for one particular black ink.  It's basically
your responsibility to make sure ink, paper and profile go together.
The earlier profiles just start with UC and you have to know which
ink needs to be in the black slot.  The UCmk and UCpk are just hints
which black ink you should be using.

If you replace the UC inks with UT inks you have to use different
profiles.  The names are different, starting with UT.   It's OK to have
all the profiles together as long as you are careful to pick the
appropriate ones.   For this reason you might find it useful to have
a separate printer name for each inkset.

How would I have a different printer name for each inkset ?
I understand (I think) how to add the QUAD2200 more than once
in PrinterSetupUtility, but how do I affiliate only certain
profiles with certain "virtual printers" ?
