fs, custom dot gain?

fs, custom dot gain?

2001-11-07 by Roger Smith

Dear People,

Please excuse the ignorance of a person new to these printing techniques,
but what does "fs" stand for and what is "custom dot gain"? Thanks for
enlightening me.

I was astounded when I oopened the package. I'm subjecting these two prints
to very close scrutiny! I guess that printing a file that was set up for
piezo, you'd need to do an inverted S curve to lower contrast. When I get my
own inks I'll do a side by side and try and nail it. As it stands FS is
easily good enough for proofing and leave Piezo for the fine prints. My
father is visiting at the moment, so I can't play too much! I'm amazed at
how close the colour is. Piezo seems to have more depth, but this is
subjective, and I can't try and match prints until I have FS myself.

First, the easy question. FS stands for Full Spectrum, a quad black
inkset made by MIS that is similar to the piezoBW inkset. As far as
Custom Dot Gain, I'm only a small step ahead of you but here goes.
In Photoshop 6, go to Edit/Color Spaces/Working Spaces/Gray. Select
Custom Dot Gain and you will see a typical curve with one point on
it. You can edit this curve for two different purposes.
1. I used it to fine tune prints using the FS inks and the piezoBW
software to try to match piezoBW prints done with piezoBW inks. For
this purpose you would have "Preserve Embedded Profiles" selected
under Color Management Policies/Gray. Changes to Custom Dot Gain
will not show on your screen but will effect any grayscale prints.
2. You can also use Custom Dot Gain to match your monitor to a B&W
print. In this case you would have Color Management Policies/Gray
set to Off. Changes to Custom Dot Gain will immediately show on your
screen image but will not effect prints.
