Anything absorbent will do, and I agree cleaning and drying the original 
pads is a huge mess. Unbelievable how much ink those things absorb.The top ones 
are probably in good shape so you can add those to a mix of absorbent material. 
If you really want to treat your printer, the maintenance kit from compass 
micro includes waste pads, capping station, pump assembly, for about 150.00 add 
6 new dampers at 10.00 each and you have a mini refurb for 225.00 or so. 
Course there is some disassembly labor involved.

Why not do the ink waste area bypass procedure and never have to deal 
with pads again?
