Getting started with B&W on 1280

Just as the 1280 is being "retired" I've decided to jump in (I guess the $100 rebate plus low price lured me in). I want to use it as a dedicated B&W printer. Piezo looks tempting, but at $300 for a starter kit, a bit steep. (Is there a way to pick the software without the ink?) Are MIS Quadtones considerably cheaper for the long term, and is the quality/tonality superb as I've heard for Piezo?
