Black-only Epson 4000 prints: an observation and a plug

Black-only Epson 4000 prints: an observation and a plug

2004-12-01 by chipcarterdc

I've recently been involved in starting a gallery and a "Digital Darkroom" rental
studio here in Cleveland OH. For an upcoming show, all three of the photogs
choose to print their B&W images on the 4000 using black ink only (OEM
Epson ink) on Enhanced Matte. I have ImagePrint for the 9600 and showed
them how to use it, but they all ended up preferring the "look" of the black-only
prints. I have tried black-only myself on the 9600 and only like it for certain
prints (hence ImagePrint). But I have to say, for the work produced for this
show (photojournalistic style documentation of the communities around each
stop of the Cleveland train lines), black-only works really well. I still probably
would have used ImagePrint if these were my images, but I was surprised at
how good these photojournalistic images look using black only on the 4000.
The "Digital Tri-X" characterization is accurate IMO.

If anyone is interested in seeing a complete show (over 60 images) printed on
the 4000 using black only, the show is at the Gallery of Photographic Arts,
2512 Church Ave., Cleveland OH (216.861.3062 for more info). The show
opens next Sat (Dec. 11) at 7pm and runs til Jan. 29.

(I assume this plug for the show is acceptable here since it lets people know
of an opportunity to see the black-only workflow in real life with a variety of
images. If you have any questions about the Gallery, the Digital Darkroom, or
this upcoming show, you can reach me directly at chipcarterdc@...)

I've been using Piezography for several years and also recently tried a black-only print on
my Epson 4000. I was blown away with the quality. It didn't look exactly like a Piezo print
but with a little adjustment here and there it looked terrific. I was printing on Moab
Entrada Bright White with a small gamut profile.

This is certainly a viable option and you can introduce other colors into the image without
having to change inksets.
