Introducing myself
2001-11-10 by bensonga@gci.net
Hello. I've been reading the posts for a few weeks and decided to introduce myself since I may soon begin asking questions. My name is Gary Benson and I live in Eagle River, Alaska which is just north of Anchorage. I've been taking photos for 25+ years, had a wet darkroom for many of those years and I've been experimenting off and on with the digital darkroom and ink jet printing for the past couple years using a barely adequate Epson 600 with the OEM 4 color inks. I recently acquired an Epson 980 printer with plans to convert it to quadtones once I've also secured an Epson 1280 for color printing. I haven't decided yet whether to use MIS or Cone inks. The 980 is a big improvement over the Epson 600 I had been using. Most of my digital images are scanned from 35mm (Canoscan 2710), medium format or 4x5 negatives (Photo CD), although I've also recently purchased and begun using a Canon G2 (a very nice digital camera, but I'm used to manual focus, metering, etc so the G2 feels awkward to use). The 980 prints using OEM inks look pretty good to me. Unfortunately, I've not had an opportunity to see any prints using MIS, Cone/piezeo or other quadtone inks and therefore have no real basis of comparison. Of course, most everything I've read indicates that the quadtones will produce superior B&W prints, I just haven't had a chance to see them myself yet. I have so much to learn......I look forward to participating in the List and learning from each of you. Regards, Gary Benson
