Advice to Newbie Quadtone Printers

Advice to Newbie Quadtone Printers

2001-11-10 by Steadman Uhlich

This posting is for anyone new to this forum and quadtones, but it is also in response to a nice intro note from a new forum member. I hope this reply will help anyone new to the forum.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Call Inkjetmall.com and ask for a sample print to be sent to you. It is free. As for other quadtones, perhaps one of the MIS users could send you a sample too. Paul Roark's method seems to be the most versatile of the MIS inksets. Piezography is very popular and has been the leading method for the last year or so. But things change and new products come out.

2. Visit the Piezography forum on yahoogroups. That forum is older than the DigitalBW forum and it has literally thousands of postings on all types of topics that will be of interest to you. Everything from scanning, to papers, to archival issues, to inks, to you name it. Just pick a topic and do a "search" of the postings. There were lots of good postings and topics from about January to May of 2001. After that, the forum disolved a little with the split to other groups such as this. Whether you pick Piezo inks or not, the Piezo forum has a wealth of quadtone information and tips on it.

3. Look thoroughly in the files section of this forum. There is a different set of materials and more images to view which can be helpful. But, this forum is very new and does not have much of an archive of issues yet.

Good luck and good light,
Steadman

P.S. I like your neck of the woods.

  Subject: [Digital BW] Introducing myself

Hello. I've been reading the posts for a few weeks and decided to
introduce myself since I may soon begin asking questions. My name is
Gary Benson and I live in Eagle River, Alaska which is just north of
Anchorage. I've been taking photos for 25+ years, had a wet darkroom
for many of those years and I've been experimenting off and on with
the digital darkroom and ink jet printing for the past couple years
using a barely adequate Epson 600 with the OEM 4 color inks. I
recently acquired an Epson 980 printer with plans to convert it to
quadtones once I've also secured an Epson 1280 for color printing. I
haven't decided yet whether to use MIS or Cone inks. The 980 is a
big improvement over the Epson 600 I had been using. Most of my
digital images are scanned from 35mm (Canoscan 2710), medium format
or 4x5 negatives (Photo CD), although I've also recently purchased
and begun using a Canon G2 (a very nice digital camera, but I'm used
to manual focus, metering, etc so the G2 feels awkward to use).

The 980 prints using OEM inks look pretty good to me. Unfortunately,
I've not had an opportunity to see any prints using MIS, Cone/piezeo
or other quadtone inks and therefore have no real basis of
comparison. Of course, most everything I've read indicates that the
quadtones will produce superior B&W prints, I just haven't had a
chance to see them myself yet.

I have so much to learn......I look forward to participating in the
List and learning from each of you.

  Regards,

  Gary Benson
