Re: [Digital BW] Calibration . . . Monaco, Spyder, Gretag?

I have no intention of starting any of those pathetic x is better than y because "I" own it threads, but I need to replace a calibration device. Due to an unfortunate series of circumstances involving a cat being where it shoudn't be, my impatience, sudden eruption of escape, and consequent falling and crushing of aforesaid device (my fault), I am in a quandry (the cat is fine . . . she doesn't get any salmon for a day or two . . . maybe a week).

My question is as follows, I have seen numerous peolple mention "Spyder" (recently deceased . . . mine that is) and a lot of favorable comment towards Gretags' unit, but virtually no fans of the Monaco "Optix" . . . WHY? I can get a better deal on one of them than any other unit at this time, but am hesitant because of the dearth of any commentary regarding their gear.

As to this being maybe off-topic, well perhaps, though virtually all of the serious printers out there/here will indeed have a calibration unit, whereas if I go to a colour management list I am sure to get a thousand posts bitching about how the thingamawhatitz is serially glued to the whositz in the secondary upper whatchamacallit . . . I don't give a damn about the tech finery, I just want to know if it works for you, and if yes/no, why.

thanks in advance

I use the Monaco spyder just like the one that died and until it dies
I have no disire to replace with the latest and greatest of the week.
With my monitor calibrated and using Roy's Lab grayscale workspace
along with UT2 inks in an Epson 1280, I can successfully get WYSIWYG
with my system using QTR. Now I can go back and reprint some images
from a year ago when I was just struggling with this task.

Johnny

I am quite happy with my Optix, now owned by xrite. I use it with
an Eizo LCD and a Mitsubishi CRT. No problems, easy to use and does
not require a lot of time.

Have you thrown the new Spyder 2 Pro into the mix? It seems to have potential (per the writeups). I believe that one or two on this list may already have one.

I think only because it's newer and doesn't have as large a user base.
The price is extremely reasonable. I've seen positive comments on the
colorsync list, and Monaco seems to have garnered a lot of praise for
other new profiling products as well.

I have an Optix and it works fine, many people around here (france) have it
and seems satisfied. I think all is more a matter of marketing at a certain
period than the true product quality. Gretag, Monaco or Colorsync all do the
job, take the best deal.

I am open to any of them. . . . the only reason I asked the question was
that I could get a better deal on the Optix, but as I mentioned it seems
that virtually no one has experience with them (though to date there have
been 2 posts that show otherwise . . . thanks folks). The lack of people
using the Optix unsettles me a little bit . . . I get the impression they
come pre-packed with the bubonic plague or some other dreadful potentiality!

Thank you very much for your input. It is greatly appreciated . . . I will jump on the offer I have for the Monaco and will live with it.

again, thank you all

all the best to you

I have the Monaco Optis XR Pro. I'm happy with it, although I'm not
a sufficiently expert user for this have much bearing on your
decision.

The reason I chose the Monaco was a review I found online somewhere
which said that all these devices work well with new monitors, but
the Monaco did the best when working with old monitors (I'm a
cheapskate, and so have old monitors). The old Spyder did very
badly with old monitors.

However since reading this group, I have wondered whether I should
have bought the Gretag-M Eye-one, because of the way that people use
it to linearise QTR. I confess that I don't fully understand how
this is done, and therefore have no idea whether I can do this with
the Monaco.
