I am interested in puchasing a good b&w printer, as well as knowing which ink system & paper combination to use. I am a novice to the digital photo domain. I have a canon g5 and a canon i960. The i960 is useless for b&w, but does a pretty good job for color. Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Fireofgodnow, >I am interested in puchasing a good b&w printer, as well as knowing >which ink system & paper combination to use. >Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated. There are several articles on BW digital printing at the website link below. They discuss basic concepts, current materials, how to's, different papers, etc. Lot's of good info for getting started. In the U.S., the 1160 has not been sold for some time, unfortunately. Today, I think the easiest & cheapest, high quality, archival pigment, dedicated B&W system is the Epson C86 (about $70) with the MIS (www.inksupply.com) "EZ" inks (warm-pure carbon or neutral - or a mix). (Of course, since I designed it (for free), I may be biased.) This system relies on the sliders and other controls in the printer driver to control adjust for different papers. So, no other software needs to be bought or loaded. Any image editor will do. See my information page at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm. The C86 can only print up to 8x10, however. For 13 inch paper, there are a number of options. The Epson 1270, 1280, 2000P, and 2200 can all do top notch B&W. See my index at for lots of information at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/index.htm. The UT2 and UT7 inksets are variable-tone, dedicated B&W inksets that have the option of controlling them with the printer driver controls, like the EZ inks. Beyond that, I usually use Photoshop image adjustment curve to control the inksets. Paul www.PaulRoark.com _________________________
