convert to B&W, Photoshop Levels and Curves

convert to B&W, Photoshop Levels and Curves

2004-12-24 by rgb2bw

I realize one of the last things the world needs is another way to
convert color images to B&W, but I am still inviting you to visit my
web site to see the method I developed. When I first started using
Adobe Photoshop to convert color images to B&W, I tried the usual
methods and found them unsatisfactory. So I ended up spending a
better part of a year researching, developing, testing and
documenting a method, which I call the Tone Management System, which
supports a visualization approach to B&W image making. In the end,
it is not a complex process, but it fully supports the ability to
manage tone globally, locally (using selections and/or layer masks),
by color range, by color channel or by targeting tone itself.

The site also has in depth discussions on the Photoshop
Hue/Saturation, Levels and Curves controls and has a number of free
downloads. One of the downloads is a Photoshop brushes file. I find
the Photoshop default brush set does not necessarily contain the
brushes most commonly used by photographers. The brush set I created
contains the shapes and softness I find the most useful for
photography.

The site is free, there is no need to register to use the site and it
does not leave cookies on your computer. The home page is
www.zuberphotographics.com. The specific page for the Tone
Management System is www.zuberphotographics.com/page_TMSIntro.htm.

Hi Zuber, I tried to download your brush set but a message says the
file is not compatible with Photoshop 7.0. Is that true or I am doing
something wrong?

Renan,

I originally created the brush set in Photoshop 7 and have updated it
in CS. I have been using CS for a while and no longer have 7.0
installed. But I will check around and see what I can figure out.

I also tried and received a message at download re ³failed, decoding failed²

Renan and J Vee,

My research shows that Photoshop CS stores its brushes as 16-bit and
this is why Photoshop 7.0 cannot read the file. I have not been able
to find out how to make the CS brushes backward compatible so I have
taken my 7.0 CD and installed Photoshop 7.0 on an older computer I
have. I am in the process of re-creating the brushes. They should
be available later on today. I will let you know.

Renan and J Vee,

I believe I have fixed the issue. There are now two brush files on
the download section of http://www.zuberphotographics.com/ . One was
created in CS and the other was created in 7.0.

Hope this fixes the problem.

Thanks a lot Thomas,
