For Stephen Billiard-Behavior mod/feature requests for QTR/GUI

For Stephen Billiard-Behavior mod/feature requests for QTR/GUI

2004-12-26 by Steven Karafyllakis

Hello Stephen;

After putting in a little time with the 2+ versions of your GUI, I
find myself wishing for a couple changes I hope you will consider.
The first one has to do with the name of the currently loaded preset-
it goes away when the spooling is finished, so by the time you're
done printing an image, you have to remember which preset is loaded.
Not a big deal 10 minutes down the road, but since the program now
retains print settings between uses, it would be nice if it also
retained the name of those settings as well.
The other is more a feature request, and probably a lot more
difficult, but I'll ask anyway, & you tell me if you're willing to
go there: For those of us who use roll paper in particular, it would
be great if we could position and print more than one image on a
given size of paper. As it stands, I find myself cutting 24x14
strips off the roll to print two 11x14s, for instance. Cutting and
printing heavily curled roll paper is no picnic.

Thanks for considering these, and thank for all the hard work you
and Roy have put into QTR/GUI.

It would indeed be nice to be able to place more than one image in
the output area, but it's easy to use Photoshop to create a big
canvas and drag two or more images onto it, thereby achieving a
similar effect.

Many users of this forum have Qimage and routinely place one or more
pictures (same or different size) on one "canvas", print to file in
Qimage and then use QTR/QTRGui to get it on paper.

Yes, it's a real clunker of a procedure, isn't it?

I realize there are workarounds for this as with everything else in
this world...It's just slower and more awkward.

The bit with the Preset Name going away has to do with changing margins or
such. I am changing it so that the only thing that will make the name go
away is changing ink type settings.

As for multiple prints per page, That change would require QuadToneRIP and
QTRgui to both change. It would be a pretty extensive change. Have you
investigated Qimage? (www.ddisoftware.com) Most people with a need for page
management on the PC use Qimage. It really does not make since to try to
duplicate its features since you can easily co-ordinate Qimage and QTRgui.
Just set QTRgui to monitor a folder and Qimage to print to a file in that
monitored folder.

Thanks, that will help a lot!

I had a feeling it would mean major changes-thought I'd ask anyway.

I currently own and use Qimage, but haven't been able to make
the 'print-to-file' work for me yet-I'll try again, perhaps with a
different incantation this time?

Thanks
