Laurence,
You might consider keeping the R800 for color and spending the $70 it takes
to get an Epson C86. See http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm<http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm>
for a full description of the system.
Outstanding 8x10 B&W does not take a medium format camera. Good 35 or
probably even the good digitals can to it now.
I don't use the term giclée. Not only does it have a slang meaning that is
not appropriate, but the old giclée prints were dye prints that faded
quickly and gave the class a bad reputation. The carbon pigment prints
we're now doing are closer to silver longevity than to the giclée longevity.
Happy New Year.
Paul

Subject: [Digital BW] Shooting for the stars
A very Happy New Year to all,
I have been trying with great fervor to obtain a level of B&W inkjet
printing that has been eluding me for quite some time now. I've
been using the Fred Miranda BW Workflow Pro for my Color to B&W
conversion in Photoshop CS, and I have an Epson R800. I prefer
Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl, and also use the Epson Enhanced Matte,
and Premium Glossy papers. An example of the kind of perfection
that I'm looking for is at http://www.alennox.net<http://www.alennox.net/>. This is the
artist Annie Lennox's website. She's also a photographer, and there
is a killer B&W photograph of her in the Gallery on this website. I
do have a sneaking suspicion, that this level of B&W is a medium
format film thing, and only in my dreams will I achieve this level
of giclée type printing.
If anyone has any suggestions/recommendations on how to achieve this
with Photoshop CS and my R800, I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks,
Laurence M. Schwarz
