streaking/smearing with 1280, UT2 CFS, & Permajet Alpha

Hi all, I'm getting some smearing and streaking when printing with my 1280, with UT2 CFS, onto Permajet Alpha (300 gsm paper). I have the printer set to the "thicker paper" setting. Now...I don't think I had this problem in the past. However, I did remove the pizza wheel rollers because they were causing issues with Ilford Smooth Pearl. Is it possible that the absence of the wheels is letting the paper...curl upward or something, and rubbing against the innards of the printer? To make things weirder, the middle of the print is fine, it's only the top of the print that gets smeared. Any suggestions? Anyone else seeing this?
