B&W software apps ...

B&W software apps ...

2005-01-17 by steveabrink

Has anyone tried the Fred Miranda B&W Pro and/or the Power Retouche
B&W s/w...? I think I read somewhere with the FM when you apply
filters it causes image degradation and not sure if it works in 16
bit...?

Also, I have a few B&W prints that I would like to add a film frame
edge effect that emulates what can be done in a darkroom... The only
package I know of is Extensis Photo Frame and was wondering if anyone
has tried it or know of other apps? Most of the effects look
cheeseball, and I guess I could make my own ...

Thanks in advance

I have both and for me the power retouche is miles and miles better.
The miranda plug-in just destroys anything with red in it, even in 16
bit. Th epower retouche also has settings to mimic diferent films and
paper grades. The main diference however is the quality of the output.
I also have the silver-oxide (?) plug, which is also not as good as the
power retouche. All of this of course, just one persons opinion and
experience, but I think that is what you are asking for.

Steve -

I pretty much agree with Doug. Power ReTouche is my number one filter
set, especially for BW conversions.

silver Oxide does a great job as far as it goes, but doesn't match the
feature set.

Another outstanding choice is Color Efex Pro.

All three of these come in 16bit versions.

The Miranda plug-in was a pure waste of money. Not only inaccurate
but with a poor preview window and very poorly designed. I feel like
I flushed the money down the toilet. I tried for a week to like it,
but have not touched it since.

Hi,
I use the b/w conversion tool from The Lights Right Studio. I find it very accurate and easy to use.
http://www.thelightsright.com/DigitalDarkroom/PhotoshopTools.htm

His action has a number of conversion tools, the latest upgrade has conversions that mimic different
filters you would use with b/w film.

Hi,

For B+W conversion, as well as many other things, I use Pixel Genius
"Photokit" http://www.pixelgenius.com/photokit/index.html

It works in 16 bit and it creates a new layer when applying effects, thus
not degrading the image. I also use their sharpener for capture and output.

It's very good, in my opinion.
