QTR questions for more experienced users

2005-01-18 by jespes2

Hello,

I'm trying QuadTone Rip on an XP machine and it's very promising.
Some questions for more experienced users here--and
apologies in advance if they've been covered. I didn't see answers
in the archives.

1- Since there's no curve in QTR for Epson Velvet Fine Art, I'd
be interested in opinions on which preloaded curves seem to work
well with this paper (or, are best avoided).

2- Most curve names are easy enough to decode (eg: UC-EEnhMatte-
cool = Ultrachrome inks, EEM paper, cool tone). But what is UC-
NoBlack-neutral?

3-Re the "blend" slider: If I simply want to use one curve (and
not blend two curves), is it best to select the same curve
on both sides of the slider, and leave the slider control in the
middle at 50? Or, set the curve I want in the left-hand window,
ignore the right-hand window, and set the slider to 100? Or do
something else.

4-Finally, is there ever reason to use the "none" setting.

Many thanks in advance,
Jesse

2 - The UC-NoBlack-neutral profile uses no black ink and was designed
for use with RC papers. If you have matte black ink installed and
print primarily on matte papers you could use the NoBlack profile to
make the occasional RC print without having to change your black ink to
photo black. The other advantage this profile has over RC paper
profiles that use PK is that there is no shadow hue crossover from
neutral to warm because of the warmth of PK ink. The NoBlack profile
is essentially just a neutralized (with a little LC and LM) Light Black
Only profile so there is no crossover hue shift from LK to K as there
is with the PK profiles. Paul Roark's new neutral PK ink should solve
this crossover problem.

Carl,

Thank you for the explanation of US-NoBlack-neutral -- very
interesting. Tempted to try it just for kicks, even though I usually
use matte paper.
best,
Jesse
