Inks compatibility

2005-01-22 by zapzap_it

Dear James,

I appreciated your articles on fine art of B&W digital printing. I
have, however, many doubts concerning the compatibility between
printers and inks. You clarify very well all the aspects of Black
Only printing referred to the Epson 2200 printer, but what about the
1290 printer that I use for Color and B&W works enhanced with
Photoshop?

May I get pigment inks directly from Epson for this printer?
Are the new MIS GP inks surely compatible with it?
Any tips about the color fine art?
Where to find, if necessary, new drivers to use pigment inks and
papers ?

Many thanks, Emiliano

The 1290 is, I think, the European version of the 1280 sold here in
the US. The 1280 makes excellent BO prints, for all practical
purposes indistinguishable from 2200 prints. Unless there is
something different about the 1290 driver, it should do the same. I
suggest trying some BO prints with whatever black ink is in the 1290
now. That will tell you if it can do BO or not. If it can and you
like the results, then you can invest in some pigment ink. All that
is needed for BO is the Black cart, so it's not a big investment.

>May I get pigment inks directly from Epson for this printer?

I don't think Epson makes pigment carts for it.

>Are the new MIS GP inks surely compatible with it?

Sorry, I don't know. Best to ask MIS.

>Any tips about the color fine art?

Not from me. This is a BW forum.

I don't think there are special drivers for pigment inks.
