QTR/4000_question

QTR/4000_question

2005-01-27 by bromois

Hello, i have installed QTR on a Mac running OSX 10.3.6. and am
attempting to print to a 4000. the problem is that when i set to
print, as the utility is spooling the file, the 4000 spits out the
manually fed sheet after alignment and says "paper out". if i
re-feed, same thing happens. Being that there is no help file with
the 4000 QTR install, i am kind of at an impass for instructions on
what the problem might be.
I tried adjusting paper size, margins, and source profile to no avail.
Does anybody with experience in a 4000/QTR/OSX setup have any input??

I have experience running 2200/QTR/Windows, so maybe it is something
specific to Mac QTR that i am missing??

Where are you manually feeding the paper? Thru the front slot (flat
feed), or thru the top
slot? And is the paper a custom size? And presumably you've tried
turning the 4000 off/on
just to reset it.

the paper is Hahnemuhle photo rag 188(11x17), and is top fed. I have
turned the 4000 off/on, reset the utility, etc..

Maybe i will try to re-install, or try another paper....tomorrow.

Any other input is GrEATLY appreciated.

thanks.

I've been successfuly using QTR to print on manually fed papers using
the Mac, so let's try and see what you are doing differently from me.

1. I feed the paper first and wait until the machine accepts it and is
ready to print. I have only done this through the front slot with QTR.

2. I print using QTR from PS

I know the 4000 is a little finicky about what setting it needs for it
to actually print on manually fed paper, but it usually gives you a
"Forbidden Media.." warning when the setting does not match the
inserted sheet. Wait a sec, you say it gives you a "Paper Out"
message? That generally means the tray is out of paper. So the printer
is expecting a sheet of paper in the tray, but instead you have fed it
manually and it doesn't know this. For top fed manual sheets, the 4000
wants to see any paper with the word Photo in it. So in other software
(let's say ImagePrint), printing onto paper manually fed thru the top,
one would have to choose "Photo XXXX Paper" for the 4000 to accept the
sheet and print on it.

So you might want to try choosing a paper in QTR's Printer Features
popup that includes the word Photo, even if it is counter-intuitive,
to just fool the printer into printing.

Nick, thanks for the reply. I put the paper in the tray and it printed, although i still had it
set to manual feed. This 4000 just seems to be a finicky little bitch when it comes to the
paper feed. Front loading seems to be quite complicated for me in terms of getting the
sheet straight, i haven't given it a tremendous amount of practice yet but it does not seem
very intuitive. i've read the manual, watched the QT tutorial and it still is very hit and
miss. Do you have any tips in that department??

thanks

Re: QTR/4000_question

Did you try the manual top feed while choosing Photo XXX Paper in the
QTR Printer
Features dialog? I'd like to know if that worked, because I'm going
to have to use it soon!

As for front loading, it's next to impossible using Epson's provided
information, because
it's wrong. I tried 20-30x to get a 17x22 sheet of Ultrasmooth 500gm,
and it just wouldn't
accept it. So I called Epson, and their procedure is different from
what it says in the
manual. On the paper tray cover there are a series of lines. The ones
you are concerned
with are the line where it says "Letter", the line where it says "A3"
(or something like that -
I'm just doing this from memory), and the big line that says "Other"
which runs the full
width of the paper tray. But the most important line is the small one
on the right edge with
the arrow pointing at it. The Epson manual says to push the paper
against the right edge
guide, which looks to be a small piece of white plastic in the mouth
opening. If you do
this, like you do for top feed, the paper will be drawn in too far to
the right to print on,
and the printer will reject it. Instead, square up the paper with the
line that corresponds to
the size paper you are using, and use the line with the arrow as your
right edge. Might be
tricky with Letter size, but it's very easy with a 17" wide sheet.
