qtr for dummies...

qtr for dummies...

2005-02-02 by steve208242

ok I'm stupid.

I downloaded qtr, but I can't find any instructions or manuals... can anyone pass on a clue
to how to get it to work. I've searched the forum to no avail. It seems to have loaded onto
my g5 ok (it's in the ppd folder). I've searched roy's site and there's a 'program and profile
installation' guide, but nothing on how to get it up and running

cheers

Steve,

Click the QTR2.1 folder/icon, you will see folders that say quickstart, quadtonerip2.1pkg
etc. Their is a release notes folder, click this and the quick start files for text on how to get
started. Post again if you get stuck along the way. BTW this is for a MAC, I'm not sure
about with a PC.

Steve

Docs is an issue but there are a number of readmes in the download. First
you need to follow the instructions for adding the printer - carefully.
Then start to play with the existing curves. From the get go I would use
Roy's new Perceptual Intent workflow - see his website.

It's actually easier now with 2.1 to add the printer. Just go to the folder profiles, select the
printer youe using, in my case I selected 4000UC, then in this fall click the install-printer#,
that matches your printer.

Roy walked me through it just the other day.

Re: [Digital BW] qtr for dummies...

2005-02-02 by jsigmonmd24

Steve,

Now that you've done the install, Go to photoshop, pull up a photo to test with, go to print
preview, make sure show more options is clicked, choose colour management box, then
document on mine says QTR gray lab (but thats only if you also download the lab
grayscale download under the QTR download on the harrington website, which you might
as well go ahead and do now, its nice for proofing your output), then under print space
pick profile QTR gray lab and below that select perceptual and mark the black
compensation box.. Whew

Then click on print, under next box pick quad4000 under printer, which I promise will be
their since you did the 4000 install, than below that pick quadtone RIP and the rest is
intuitive before pressing print again.

BTW make sure the 4000 was hooked up and powered on when you did the install 4000.

keep it up!

I've got the release notes but that concentrates on
installing and print workflow... I've no idea hoe to
get it up and running

It's actually easier now with 2.1 to add the printer.
Just go to the folder profiles, select the
printer youe using, in my case I selected 4000UC, then
in this fall click the install-printer#,
that matches your printer.

Roy walked me through it just the other day.

big help... I'm experimenting

Steve,

Now that you've done the install, Go to photoshop,
pull up a photo to test with, go to print
preview, make sure show more options is clicked,
choose colour management box, then
document on mine says QTR gray lab (but thats only if
you also download the lab
grayscale download under the QTR download on the
harrington website, which you might
as well go ahead and do now, its nice for proofing
your output), then under print space
pick profile QTR gray lab and below that select
perceptual and mark the black
compensation box.. Whew

Then click on print, under next box pick quad4000
under printer, which I promise will be
their since you did the 4000 install, than below that
pick quadtone RIP and the rest is
intuitive before pressing print again.

BTW make sure the 4000 was hooked up and powered on
when you did the install 4000.

keep it up!

Re: [Digital BW] qtr for dummies...

2005-02-02 by Steve Kale

No

You should download and have QTR Gray Lab as your grey scale workspace (QTR
linearizes Lab L readings and hence you are better off working in Lab - QTR
Gray Lab is Lab without the a and b channels). When you go to print (or
create a soft proof) you should have document space QTR Gray Lab (when you
loaded the document you will have had to decide whether to convert or assign
QTR Gray Lab), print space should be either QTR Gray Matte Paper or QTR Gray
Photo Paper (not QTR Gray Lab as noted below) with Perceptual Intent and Use
Black Point Compensation. This will use the perceptual intent engine to
remap file values to the tonal range typical of matte or photo paper. This
is a recent but very important/powerful addition to QTR. You should have
already done the page set up for the QTR printer. In the QTR print driver
take a look at Quadtone RIP's settings. In general, select 1440 super (2880
has issues at least on the 21/2200) and check out how you can select the
curves - these must have been installed prior to opening PS...follow the
instructions for installing the curves relevant to your printer.

Please trim your posts.

Steve,
Thank you for the clarifiaction. Blind leading the blind, Eh!.

Sorry I'm too wordy for you. Like others have expressed, sometimes the abbrev used to
describe technical workflow is hard to follow for us neophytes.

BTW, 2880 dpi looking good on he 4000.

Jason

I don't mean abbreviate - just trim all the stuff off the bottom of your
posts (ie at least the Yahoo Groups stuff) as it gets duplicated,
triplicated etc.

Glad to hear 2880 works on the 4000. Wish I had one of those damn
things...but if you buy one in the UK you get raped.

When you are in the QTR print driver ie after leaving the PS print pane,
Printer - select your QTR printer, and then under the drop down list (Copies
and Pages) you should see QUADTONE RIP. That and Printer Features are
relevant for QTR printing.

Steve,

That makes it two of us..=*^)

I've installed it but can't find the print driver when I try to add the
printer after finishing the installation - installed it on several G4's
as well as my G4 Powerbook - and now where can I find the printer...

When you figure it out, would you please let me know what we're both
doing wrong....

Please...=*^)

Cheers,

Christer

ok, I'm a newbie with the QTR too :]

I have yet to install it.

My question : is it only good for printers using quad black ink sets ?
or did i miss something ... which wouldn't surprise me tbh.

thanks

If you have the ability to make the profiles (following the instructions)
you can use it to drive any ink in any supported printer. Curves have been
made for the Epson ultrachrome ink printers.

Re: qtr for dummies...

QTRgui will work only with TIFF files. Your existing files are
probably JPEGs or RAW, so to print them with QTRgui you need to copy
into TIFF format. Easy. Then find your TIFFs from QTRgui.

The beauty of QTRgui is that it works VERY WELL with standard inksets,
you don't need anything exotic, and you especially don't need
additional gizmos OR profiles.

Epson's black is reportedly blacker than the quad black sets as well,
though warmer.

QTRgui seems the simplest application I've used for anything.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
