Switching inksets in the Epson 4000

Switching inksets in the Epson 4000

2005-02-02 by Carl Schofield

I'm in the process of switching over my Epson 4000 from UC inks to MIS
UC Equivalent inks (including the new MIS PKN-neutral Photo K and MIS
UT7 LK-also neutral). Does anyone know what volume of ink is in the
lines that go form the cartridge to the head? I want figure out how
many purge pages will be required to flush the PK and LK lines when
printing either 100% K or LK. I can get the ink volume used per page
from the 4000 printer utility, but need to know the volume in the line.
If there is a very large volume to purge then I could just do a power
clean cycle, but that will waste a lot of the color inks as well.

Don't know about the compatibility of the two inksets mentioned, but
with any other two inksets the standard advice is to install flush
carts (you can make them yourself with distilled water), and flush
until the lines are absolutely clear, preferably including a couple of
days in there where the printer is just sitting with the flush in the
lines. The ink wasted is a lot cheaper than replacing a head
hopelessly clogged with incompatible inks.

James,

If I were switching from dyes I would definitely flush first, but I
don't think that the MIS UC Equivalent and Epson UC are incompatible.
I had no problems switching on the 2200, but of course there it was
just a matter of purging the small volume of ink in the head. I just
went ahead and used the purge procedure for my 4000 and got the K and
LK inks flushed by printing about 12 K and LK 100% pages (latter with
an LK only profile). Working very well and both BO and K+LK only
profile prints are dead neutral gorgeous with the new neutral PKN and
UT7 LKN inks. Dmax is about 2.46. I'm going top overcoat with glop in
my 2200 and expect dmax to go up to about 2.5, based on Paul's
experience.

Carl,

How did you build the LK-only profile--through a RIP, ie, QTR? Once
MIS makes their PKN and LKN UC Equivalents available, I'll be trying
them on my 4000 as well.

Thanks,

Martin

Martin,

The inks are already available if you buy in bottles and fill the carts
yourself (just get some empty 7600 carts, a 60cc syringe, 7600 bottom
fill adapter, and a large format chip resetter for use after
refilling). I just received the inks today form MIS. Part numbers are
UT-PKN-4-K for 4 oz bottle of PKN and UT7-4-LK for 4 oz bottle of
neutral version of Light Black. I can send you either a QTR or IJC
version of an LK only profile if you wish. Just contact me off list
and let me know which platform (PC or Mac) you use. You will also have
to make new color profiles for papers you use for color printing since
the PKN and particularly LKN will affect color balance. Depending on
the subject matter you print in B&W you might not need the LKN. The
PKN in the 4000 makes excellent neutral BO prints for busy landscapes
and other subjects that don't have smooth tonal gradients in the
highlight areas.
