Is there any software that can make the Epson 2200 use the light and dark
black inks only? Would that still allow the printer to make normal colour
prints?

Thanks

Yes, QTR or IJC/OPM. The warm or "carbon" profiles created with these
RIPs use only the black and light black inks.

Hello: It's not advisable to print with the light and dark black inks
only; the resulting image will not have the full resolution that
printing with
all 7 inks affords. Peter

QuadToneRIP will do this. Also other Raster Image Processors (RIPs).

Thanks for the additional info, Peter, I'll keep that in mind.

I've been looking at the "Getting Started with QuadToneRIP 2.0" and I'm
finding this really compicated. Am I right in thinking there's going to be a
pretty steep learning curve? I haven't loaded the software yet, and I haven't
decided to buy any additional inks. I want to see if I can make a print with a
neutral tone using Epson UC inks first. I just don't have a clue how to begin.

No, for the Ultrachrome set up it is not difficult at all. Just download the gimp print driver
accessable there, download the qtr, and click on the install curves folder for Ultrachrome
2200. It will self load. Then restart the computer and add the printer into the OS ( it is
quite easy in OSX) and choose this driver to print out of instead of the standard Epson
driver. It will not effect your ability to access the Epson driver for color etc. The driver will
be called Quad Tone 2200 or something like that. Just follow the directions in the proper
sequence and you will be fine. Ignore all the information about custom linearizing your
printer. You do not need to do that with the newer Epson Ultrachrome machines. There is
more information in that packet than you need concern yourself with.

Thanks for the reassurance and advice, John. All that stuff does sound a little
intimidating. I'll try going with your suggestions and see what happens.

I have one other Issue -- probably minor. I have to use Classic/PS 7 to access
the Manual Feed for the Velvet Fine Art paper that I'm using. Is that going to
make any difference? (For example, I did notice that Epson's updated profiles
don't show up as options in Classic, though they do in OSX.)

Cheers,

peter

I belive Epson has updated these drivers to fix the manual feed situation. One of my
students had this problem months ago on a 2200 and he updated to the newest driver
and that was resolved. Go to the Epson website and If I were you I would forget about OS 9
completely. Pretend it dosen't exist anymore and you will be in much better shape.
Nothing is being updated to work in Classic . If you don't have Panther get it.

I'm not even sure I have the latest Epson driver, and I'm using OS 10.2.8, but I can
use the manual feed slot
just by loading the paper there (with the lever all the way down>then press the paper
button after moving the lever up to envelope, and the printer adjusts its position). I
simply click on print when I'm ready, and the photo prints.

Hi Sarah,

Are you printing from QUAD2200? When I do, I just get an "Invalid printer
settings" warning. I can't seem to print from that driver at all.

When I print from Epson 2200 Firewire of USB it prints fine, but I haven't
managed to get it to print from the manual feed slot. I didn't try pressing the
paper button. I'll try that after dinner.

Thanks for your comments.

Peter,
Are you saying youcan't print from QUAD 2200 at all, or just using the straight feed
slot?
If you can't print from QUAD2200, maybe you need to add it (in Print Center if you're
using OS 10.2+ or from System preferences>Print and fax>Set up printers if you're
using Panther). You need to select QUAD 2200 in the Page Setup section as well as in
the "Print" section.

Re: Light Black/Dark Black/Matte Black

Hi Sarah,

I tried your method for manual feed and it worked fine with the Epson USB
driver. I haven't tried it with Firewire yet. I wasn't pressing the button to get
the printer to adjust the paper position. That made all the difference. I don't
have to do that in Classic. Then again, in Classic, you have the option of
choosing manual feed. Either way, I'm really relieved I don't have to go into
Classic to print on thicker paper. Thanks for that.

I'm still not able to print from the QUAD2200 driver. Yes, I have selected it in
all the places you mentioned (I'm on Panther 3.5).

When I click Print, the QUAD2200 print driver comes up in the dock and it
says it's going to print the document listed, but it just doesn't seem to be able
to do it, and then the job vanishes from the list and it says, "no print jobs" and
that's it. A couple of times it said, "Invalid printer settings" but it hasn't done
that recently.

Another odd thing, is that the QTR curves 1 and 2 don't always appear in the
print dialogue box, even though the Blend Curves option is there. I must be
doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what it is.

Peter,
This sounds like something with QTR installation rather than your system. It might
require reinstalling the program, but maybe Roy or one of the folks involved in
development will have a better idea.

Thanks again, Sarah. Cris figured out the problem. A limitation of the driver,
apparently. Only someone who'd run into it would know about. I hadn't found it
in the archive. It seems that the 2200 can't use the 2880 resolution setting
that's available in the pull-down.

Anyway, I've seen my first print and it looks very neutral, which is what I'm
after. I'm going to have to find profiles for the paper I already have in stock
(Velvet Fine Art) because the density is a little low compared to the monitor and
the Epson driver print (which looks green in daylight).

I'm using the PFA profile supplied with the download. Perhaps PFA has
different ink absorbtion to VFA. I'd like to get the prints a little darker, closer to
the monitor and the density of the Epson driver print.

Thanks again for your help.

Peter,
I've had good results using the profiles for EEM for VFA.

Learning QTR(was Light Black/Dark Black/Matte Black)

2005-02-16 by krn_ptr

Thanks for the tip, Sarah. I'll give it a try later today or tomorrow. Is there a
simple way of increasing the density, contrast etc. in QTR?

I notice there are "Expert" setting options, but I don't know when or how to
access them. I'd like to know how to make these easier (?) adjustments
before getting into what looks like a serious learning curve to produce profiles
and use non-Epson inks.

I see there is a QTRGui for Windows. Is there anything like that for Mac? QTR
seems to be really useful software, but it's a little confusing for the new-comer.
I've worked in a darkroom for ages, but I'm not that familiar with inks and
printing theory. A friendly interface would help QTR a lot. Do you have any
experience with IJC/OPM? Their site claims a faster way to reach the first
print and seems to be suggesting a slicker interface. They don't offer a free
trial as far as I can see.
