I would like to second this praise for Joe, Bowhaus, and IJC/OPM. I, somewhat reluctantly because no demo is available, took the plunge and bought IJC/OPM based on glowing recommendations from Lou Dina and a couple of others whose opinions, though I only know them through this forum, I trust.

I no longer use IP to print B&W. Period. IJC/OPM gives me much more control over the end result, and the linearized profiles provide much better overall tonal separation, especially in the deep shadows, than IP. Joe has been more responsive to issues with the initial release of the Windows version than any other software company I've ever dealt with. And, he maintains an open mind and willingness to seriously consider suggestions for changes.

It's a simple matter: If you want complete control and desire simply the absolute finest B&W prints that inkjet can produce, then look no further. Run, don't walk, to your telephone or Bowhaus's website and place your order!

RE: [Digital BW] A plug for IJC/OPM - and a thank you to Joe Berndt

2005-02-16 by Richard

I'd like to second Alan's comments about IJC. I haven't done extensive
evaluations of other products so this doesn't constitute a comparative
recommendation. My best B/W prints so far have been using iQuads on an old
1290, using the custom profiles from Inkjetmall. I still have an affection
for the Piezography prints, they do have an almost indefinable (to me at any
rate) "something".

However with the acquisition of an Epson 4000 and potentially going bigger,
I've been looking for a solution that allowed B/W with UC inks. I'm not a
pro operation so budget is limited. I tried the Black only approach and
found I could get acceptable prints, but like Alan I took the plunge and
purchased IJC mainly on gut feeling given the amount of
documentation/tutorials on the web.

My first print using the canned German Etching Neutral profile was
excellent. Tonal range and transitions, shadow detail, neutral tint etc.
Given the extensive ability to manage profiles with IJC, I imagine the
software is capable of providing as much control as I will need

Congratulations Bowhaus

NB some info about myself

Although not a professional photographer, I have been involved in
photography all my life (my father was a pro, so most of my youth was spent
locked up in the dark). I shoot digital (Canon EOS20D), but for quality
prints I still use a Bronica GS-1, Fujichrome, Tri-X and Agfa Scala. All
scanned on Nikon 9000 /Silverfast AI. Tweaked a little in Photoshop CS, but
most adjustments done at the scanning stage. I have a calibrated setup using
Gretag Macbeth i-One Photo. Incidentally I get great and consistent colour
with this setup on my 4000, and with minimal fuss

Cheers

Richard

Hi Richard,

Use that Eye-One Photo spectrophotometer you have to measure a target and build your own linearized profile, using the Bowhaus supplied German Etching profile as a base, and I'd bet you'll see even more improvement in your prints. Remember, the profiles provided by Bowhaus were created using their printers. Yours might be (probably is) different.

Hi Alan

I normally use Photorag or Somerset Velvet papers and as there are currently
no generic profiles for them I'll need to do something. Probably use the GE
profile as a starting point as you suggest

I'm not a great experimenter however - creating the colour ICC profiles with
i-one photo was a cinch, but the IJC/OPM profiles are a different animal.

RE: RE: [Digital BW] A plug for IJC/OPM - and a thank you to Joe Berndt

2005-02-16 by Alan.Huntley@cox.net

Richard,

Building the profiles in IJC with your Eye-One is not difficult, either, as follows:

1. Open IJC and select profile.
2. Click on Linearization button.
3. Print "Target for Linearization".
4. Using your Eye-One spectro, measure the L* values for each patch and enter into each box to the left of the curve (set the vertical slider to 0.)
5. Print "Target with Linearization".
6. At this point, you should have good linearization from step 1 to step 26.
7. Adjust as necessary, and save.

There are other things you can do with your Eye-One like evaluating for color casts, and adjusting, as needed.

See Lou Dina's excellent tutorial in the Files section of this group. It's not hard. And, once you have a neutral curve, building other tone curves for cooler or warmer prints is simplicity itself.

Hope this helps.

Hi Richard,

Use that Eye-One Photo spectrophotometer you have to measure a target and
build your own linearized profile, using the Bowhaus supplied German Etching
profile as a base, and I'd bet you'll see even more improvement in your
prints. Remember, the profiles provided by Bowhaus were created using their
printers. Yours might be (probably is) different.

Richard,

Building the profiles in IJC with your Eye-One is not difficult, either, as
follows:

1. Open IJC and select profile.
2. Click on Linearization button.
3. Print "Target for Linearization".
4. Using your Eye-One spectro, measure the L* values for each patch and
enter into each box to the left of the curve (set the vertical slider to 0.)
5. Print "Target with Linearization".
6. At this point, you should have good linearization from step 1 to step 26.
7. Adjust as necessary, and save.

There are other things you can do with your Eye-One like evaluating for
color casts, and adjusting, as needed.

See Lou Dina's excellent tutorial in the Files section of this group. It's
not hard. And, once you have a neutral curve, building other tone curves for
cooler or warmer prints is simplicity itself.

Hope this helps.
