QTR Help!

QTR Help!

2005-02-24 by nickmt

Dear all,

Using osx 2,8, epson p2100,
The various sites dedicated to info have not helped me get beyond my
problem: QRT 2.1 software and curves for Epson p2100 using osx 2.x with
gimpprint and ghostscrip all seem to be loaded correctly. Gimp and qtr are
in printerlist. Ultrachrome curves are in qtr settings in print dialogue as
loaded from install 2100 in profile folder. Why, oh why, does nothing
print. Error message: GenericClass: Waiting for Device.

I know you know what I'm talkin about
Sheesh!
Nick

Connected via USB? BTW you really should be on Panther - Jaguar is not
worth the grief.

Yes usb. 2.8 worked for over a year with qtr 2.0 but that¹s not what¹s
downloading now, 2.1 is now offered.

IME, Jaguar prints very nicely with QTR 2.1d. So perhaps you just have
a really low tolerance for "grief", Steve? ;-)

BTW, when a must-have app comes along that requires Panther, I'll
certainly make the switch. But switching to Panther from a stable
Jaguar system--simply to solve a temporary glitch in printing--is a
bit of overkill, IMO.

Phil,

If I¹m not mistaken it was you who saved my a## originally, about two years
ago, when I was getting a major ulcer with that Ridiculous Epson grey
balancer. I still can¹t thank you enough for helping out with qtr (if it
was you). Tell me though, why do I periodically crash both the epson and
the qtr drivers? My suspicion is switching back and forth causes the
trouble. Is there a way of maintaining two separate print centers, still
using 2.8?

Re: [Digital BW] QTR Help!

2005-02-25 by nickmt

Thanks Steve

But Print Center Repair, as cool as it seems to be, didn¹t do the trick.
Not only has my qtr gone down, but the epson has gone down too, and I¹m
feeling like switching back and forth is what¹s causing my problems. No
amount of uninstalling/reinstalling the qtr, and gimp/ghost do the trick. I
am beginning to think the Epson driver is the root problem. I don¹t know
how to do a proper uninstall of Epson components, and I¹ve got a P2100 so
I¹ll have to wait to e-talk the epson UK folks in the am. If you know how
do that I¹m happy to have your advice, but, so, thanks.

Nick

So, there are two problems: (1) your printer won't print under QTR
(error message), and (2) crashes when switching back/forth from QTR to
the Epson driver.

I assume you're using Photoshop (Print with Preview) to print with
QTR? If not using PS, I suppose that might somehow be related to your
problem. Also do you have a decent amount of RAM installed (uhm, about
1 Gbyte or more)?

You also mentioned having installed gimp-print, but do you know that
gimp-print is not required any longer with QTR version 2.1? Having it
installed shouldn't be causing a problem (I still have it installed),
though I have heard people complain that it somehow screws things up.
Ghostscript _is_ still needed with QTR in Jaguar OS. I haven't
experienced the type of problems you describe. I can't claim to have
switched drivers back and forth all that often with my 2200, but so
far no crashing problems associated with use of QTR.

The simplest thing to try is just reinstall the Epson 2100 drivers
(most recent version). I believe you can do that without concern for
deinstalling the old ones.

Yes definitely two problems. Normally I print color with the Epson driver,
then in PS, as you said, I choose QRT if I want to print b&w. The two
problems are: QTR won¹t print, and the Epson gets corrupted. Indeed, I
can¹t merely reinstall the Epson I have to trash the printer folder in
Library, and download a whole new driver, which creates the folder all over
again. In fact this is exactly where I am now. So, do I need gimp? Could
that have been a problem? I though only Panther didn¹t need gimp?

10.2.8 was still at a moderately primative stage with respect to printing, as well as some
other things. Well, primative may be a bit unfair, and while it did work well often and for a
lot of things,

it is foolish to stick with it when something a lot better is available. You are asking for
trouble, and your wishes are...

and I think that Gimp Print, a known problem of compatibility with Epson drivers (in some
cases of course), may still be required with Jaguar (10.2) Could be wrong about the "still
required" but for sure not wrong about the compatibility problems that occur on some
systems.

I noticed when no printers listed in print center and just trying to add
qtr, it would automatically add the epson driver as well (Stylus Photo
2100).
Again (after several uninstalls and reinstalls of qtr, gimp, and ghost, and
simple reinstalls of Epson driver) nothing worked, not qtr and not epson. I
just trashed the epson folder in Library>printers, and downloaded a whole
new driver and it worked, I can print. Minutes earlier I¹d done the same
Epson download/install without trashing the library thing and it wouldn¹t
work. So, I¹m saying, in PS, when I choose qtr somehow the Epson folder
gets corrupted. There may be a panther in my future...? No such thing as
two print centers... Doh.

Re: [Digital BW] QTR Help!

2005-02-25 by Scott Graham

Hi,

As I mentioned, in some cases GIMP (long ago?) has been shown to be a real conflict
problem.

But have mentioned that, the point now is that if you should decide that it is a problem in
your case, GIMP can be very hard to get rid of.

I know of at least one case where the Epson expert in charge reformated a disk to get rid
of it. May have been with 10.1 though: a long time ago in any case.

So? There is a GIMP uninstaller on the web that may help. Or reinstall the OS. Or maybe in
your case it is not the GIMP? If you should happen to reinstall the OS, my recollection is
that with the older OSX's, GIMP is installed by default, so watch the "options".

Good luck
Scott

PS in 10.3.8 QTR virtually "self installs" and even I got it to work :) People now can run
firewire for the Epson drivers and USB (still required for OTR) for QTR with two cables and
no problems.

This is off-topic but the list of enhancements in Panther over Jaguar is
considerably long. And yes many apps now run only on or are optimised for
Panther. Just my recommendation. Move with the times and reap the
benefits.

The Epson driver you see automatically added may just be OS-X detecting the
Epson 2100 and adding it automatically with the loaded gimp driver. QTR and
the (non-Gimp) Epson drivers can sit alongside each other comfortably. Start
by deleting all your printers. Load the Epson drivers first. Then do QTR.
Make sure you load Epson USB and make sure you use the alt key when adding
QTR and select the right gimp driver there. Almost sounds like you are
installing gimp for both and that is messing things up. (And get Panther or
at least Tiger when it ships!)

It sure is hard to change old ways. From the first paragraph of ReleaseNotes:

Previous versions required dealing with gimp-print and adding the printer using
Print Center or Print Setup Utility. You do NOT need to do either of these.

The Install scripts find the usb printer and add the QTR printer names. It can be done
with Print Setup but if you use the script you can't make a mistake.

I do agree with the idea -- get the Epson driver stuff done first, its the most
temperamental. Then do the QTR script, its not affected by the other drivers.
Don't try to print simultaneously to both Epson and QTR drivers.

Yeah I am an old dog! Just haven't had to install QTR for ages - it just
works (with a few little glitches ;-) ). Wind back to the start of this
thread and maybe you can help the guy out - he's stuck back in 10.2 and when
he prints to one driver the other no longer works. Problem communicating
with printer. A clean install should be tried but I think he has tried that
already - albeit perhaps the old way....

I¹ve done all that. It¹s all the same. Gimp or no gimp - it is totally
inconclusive having gimp installed or uninstalled. QTR is giving me A LOT
of trouble.

The only thing I seem to be able to reproduce is that QTR will print on
plain paper at 750 dpi, but as soon as I ask it to print on matte, at 1440
it craps out. It sends the paper right through, only 25% (or 5% or 36% etc)
of print job gets up the barber pole, and all combinations of lights begin
to blink.

Nick, I had a similar problem in Jaguar. The file only spooled a small
percent and then it hung. But I can't remember how I got it to work, but I
did. I'm sorry, that was a long while back. If you upgrade to Panther, I
highly doubt you'll have any problems at all. I don't, not with Epson, QTR,
or IJC/OPM or other RIP's color related. Other issues were also resolved
switching to Panther. I'm not being contrary to others reports, but I
personally found the upgrade very productive.

I¹m not hung up on having to buy Panther, and I¹m thrilled to move up to
something as stable as everyone says it is, but I¹ve had qtr working for
almost 2 years, all be it I don¹t use it all the time, but why I can¹t get
it to work at all is, well, you know....
