Kirkland Costco Paper

2005-03-01 by maggieradlick

Hi Everyone, I have been doing some independent research on the
Kirland paper source. I believe what I have learned to be accurate
and my sources, who wish to remain anonymous, I believe are quite
reliable.

The Kirkland Professional Glossy paper is manufactured in Switzerland
by Ilford on a special contract formulated basis. It is a very high
volume seller and there are no plans to put it out in larger sizes
any time soon. Ilford does contract paper formulations for other
chains in the USA and they all seem to have a different tweak to
them. These papers are manufactured with a view to best retail cost,
by that I mean best value for the retail customer, therefore selling
into high volume markets. Therefore, small market niches such as the
B&W photography market do not justify the making of larger sizes.
It is indeed unfortunate but, that is how it is. For those of you
have been curious about this Costco/Kirkland paper situation I hope
this post is of some value. Best, Phil

Why would one think that the larger sizes would only be of interest to b&w printers?

Hello. Thanks for the research and feedback. I noticed this paper
myself on a recent trip to Costco,
but has anyone tested it with the various inks that we talk about here?
  For example,
how does the paper perform in terms of tonal value to say Epson Premium
Semi-gloss using a 2200 with Epson carts? Since it's Ilford, how does
it compare to
other Ilford papers that people have used? Regards, Peter G.

It's about the best glossy paper there is regardless of price -- high dmax,
very low bronzing, buffered interior paper. That's why we've been trying to
figure out a way to get it in larger sizes. Unfortunately, Costco just is
not interested.

Dear Philip,

Thank you for your e-mail to Costco Wholesale.

We are unable to share the name of the manufacturer information on our
Kirkland Signature Products, however, I have forwarded to our buyers
that you would like to see the paper available in larger sizes.

Sincerely,

Hi Paul;

I would like to suggest you try the Ilford Printasia; It's available
at Comp USA up to 13x19, and seems very similar to the Costco; It
also prints very much alike with dyes, and did quite well with
QTR&MIS UC inks.

Steve Karafyllakis

BTW any release date on the 1280 rifillable carts yet?

I tried some Ilford Printasia and was not impressed. I found the bronzing
so bad even Glop couldn't cure it.

Also, there is no additional word on the 1280 sponge-less carts. It'll be
at least a couple more weeks.

Fuji Hunt - Kirkland Costco Paper

I wonder whether Fuji Hunt High Gloss (or Satin or Lustre paper) ever
have been compared to the Kirkland paper. About two weeks ago a friend
with a 4000 showed me his gloss prints on the Fuji Hunt paper and there
was hardly any bronzing visible. The sheets here are 280 grams but rolls
are 260/240 grams. Can't compare them with Kirkland as that's not
available here. Tomorrow I get some sheets of the two qualities and I
will try them with MIS PK + Ultratones. The rolls are Gloss but not High
Gloss. The US and Europe catalogues differ as usual.

http://www.fujihunt.com/fuji/fhweb2004.nsf/files/digital%20product%20lists/$file/FH%20Media%2013-12-04.pdf

It wouldn't surprise me if Fuji Hunt buys their paper in Swiss and Japan
or let it coat in both countries.

Ernst
