Caponigro 8-bit, 16-bit

2005-03-04 by normsams

John Paul Caponigro in his book "Adobe Photoshop Master Class," and here:

http://www.peimag.com/pdf/pei03/pei0506_03/caponigropei0506_03.pdf

describes his method for working Photoshop 7 features into 16-bit format
through 8-bit images, going "back and forth between modes." I've tried
working through the process as he describes it, but get nowhere. I'm
obviously not getting it. Are any group members using this process, and if
so could someone describe it in more workable terms and workflow than Mr.
Caponigro's? Thanks much.

Go to PhotoShop 8 (CS). It offers most of those now.

I don't have the book in front of me at the moment, but wasn't he doing that because most things couldn't be done in 16 bit in PS7? PS/CS (PS8) solves most, but not all of the issues.

Hi Norm,

It's been 8 months or more since I've done this but I will try to help
you out since you don't have PS CS.
What he tells you ( in a nut shell ) is to make 2 copies of your 16 bit
scan. Archive one of them for safe keeping. You may need to start over
when you first do this as it is easy to make mistakes when you first do
this technique. Always work from a duplicate file.
Turn one of the duplicate 16 bit files into an 8 bit file. leave both
of them open.
Make all of your selections on the 8 bit image and save them all as
channels.
I use to make my corrections to the 8 bit file as adjustment correction
layers in case I needed to change something. Everything you do to the 8
bit file is then stored in the adjustment layers along with its
applicable masks.
Lets say that you make a selection on the 8 bit file and need to bring
up the levels utilizing that mask on your 8 bit file. When you have the
levels as you think they should be click save in the levels pallet.
Save that .alv file where you will be able to find it.
Then it is just a matter of having both 16 bit and 8 bit files open at
the same time. Highlight that channel in the channels pallet of the 8
bit file, then hit the reselect. Highlight that mask in the channels
pallet, hold down the shift key and mouse button and drag the mask to
the 16 bit file window and release the mouse button. You should see the
selection now loaded on your 16 bit file.
Then load the levels adjustment that you used on the 8 bit file from
the levels pop up menu by hitting the load button and loading the
correct file and hit OK.
If it doesn't work contact me off list and I will boot into my old OS 9
and go through it in PS 7 again to refresh it in my sieve mind...

Hmmm, what's that got to do with the original question?

Norm-

Rather than go through that convoluted mess in PS7, I just did everything I
could in 16-bit, then converted to 8-bit for the rest.

It's not the normally accepted work flow, but gets you there. Even now, we
adjust to what we have at hand. CS has some new features and some changes
that piss me off, but I work around them.
