QTR(Gui) bug - A3 paper, 720ppi

QTR(Gui) bug - A3 paper, 720ppi

2005-03-06 by ferdinand_paris

I seem to have a problem with QTRGui 2.2.0. I'm sending an image to
QTRGui which is 27.7cm x 40cm, to print on A3 paper (which is 29.7cm x
42 cm) at 720ppi. QTRGui tells me that the image won't fit. If I
switch between centered placement and specifying the margins manually,
I get a variety of errors, including floating point.

If I send the image at 360ppi, everything works fine.

What does QTRgui say the image sizes are? Place the mouse cursor over the image
thumbnail and a pop-up will show its size. Do this for both the 720 and the 360
dpi images.

You can also send me the image and I will see what I can learn from it.

I'm not sure whether to be worried or relieved. Last night I got
errors on several occasions. I tried to replicate this tonight, but
it seems to work correctly. As our american cousins say, ... go
figure!

Well, if the problem comes back, capture the image and send it to me.

Stephen

This problem has come back. Because it's on A3 at 720dpi, the image
that I'm trying to print is 267Mb, and too large to send you.

What I'd doing, is printing an image which is 277x400mm on A3 paper
(which is 297x420mm) at 720dpi. The image has been output from
Qimage.

When I try to open this image (from Qimage) in QTRGui, I am told that
the image doesn't fit. When I hold the mouse over the thumbnail in
QTRGui, I get "7852x11339 in" for the image size.

This looks to me as if it is reading the pixel size and interpreting
it as inches.

If I output *exactly* the same image from Qimage at 360dpi, and then
open this in QTRGui, all appears well. The measurements are correct
(albeit in inches - 10.906x15.747 in)

I don't get this problem at all when printing on A4.

Please download the TIFF tag viewer from
http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/astifftagviewer.html.

This software will let you see what the TIFF tags of the image file say.

My guess it that the image does not have a correct RESOLUTIONUNIT value.

Anyway, tell me what the values of:

RESOLUTIONUNIT, IMAGEWIDTH, IMAGELENGTH, XRESOLUTION, and YRESOLUTION are.

The tags for the 720 dpi version are

~~~~~~~
SubFileType (1 Long): Zero
ImageWidth (1 Long): 7852
ImageLength (1 Long): 11339
BitsPerSample (3 Short): 8, 8, 8
Compression (1 Short): Uncompressed
Photometric (1 Short): RGB
StripOffsets (199 Long): 8, 1342700, 2685392, 4028084, 5370776,...
SamplesPerPixel (1 Short): 3
RowsPerStrip (1 Short): 57
StripByteCounts (199 Long): 1342692, 1342692, 1342692, 1342692,
1342692,...
XResolution (1 Rational): 720
YResolution (1 Rational): 720
ResolutionUnit (1 Short): Inch
Software (36 ASCII): ImageLib by SkyLine Tools, Inc. TIFF
~~~~~~~

and for the 360dpi version are:

~~~~~~~
SubFileType (1 Long): Zero
ImageWidth (1 Long): 3926
ImageLength (1 Long): 5669
BitsPerSample (3 Short): 8, 8, 8
Compression (1 Short): Uncompressed
Photometric (1 Short): RGB
StripOffsets (196 Long): 8, 341570, 683132, 1024694, 1366256,...
SamplesPerPixel (1 Short): 3
RowsPerStrip (1 Short): 29
StripByteCounts (196 Long): 341562, 341562, 341562, 341562, 341562,...
XResolution (1 Rational): 360
YResolution (1 Rational): 360
ResolutionUnit (1 Short): Inch
Software (36 ASCII): ImageLib by SkyLine Tools, Inc. TIFF
~~~~~~~

I can't see anything fundamentally different between the two of them,
other than DPI. I ommitted to say in my previous post that I had
opened the image in PSCS to check the size and resolution, and the
720dpi version seemed alright.

This morning I tried again. I first tried to open the 720 DPI version
in QTRGui using "Image | Select Image ..." , and I got an "invalid
floating point operation" error message. (Monitoring was turned
off.)

I then turned monitoring on and moved the image into the monitored
directory, and lo and behold, it printed.

So I tried again using "Image | Select Image ...", and this time
rather than the floating point error, I got the same message as last
night - "Image does not fit", with the pixel size interpreted as
inches.

I then opened the 360dpi version (to "clear" QTRGui of the 720dpi
version) and then reopened the 720dpi version again using "Image |
Select Image ...". The floating point error returned.

This is roughly what happened last time. At the initial attempt
nothing I could do (closing other programs, various ways of getting
QTRGui to find the image, rebooting) could get QTRGui to correctly
read the size parameters. Then a day or so later it worked. Also the
nature of the problem seems to vary, with seemingly the same sequence
of steps producing different errors.
