QTR-Kayenta-Illum Alpha Smooth Not the Same

QTR-Kayenta-Illum Alpha Smooth Not the Same

2005-03-07 by Andrew Unger

I have been using Illuminata Alpha Smooth as a proofing paper for
Moab Entrada Natural. Moab's Kayenta has the same description as
the Alpha Smooth, but doesn't mention brightness. I ordered it and
found that it is very bright paper, brighter than Entrada Bright.
Its not what I expected, but at $68 for 50 sheets of 17x22 from
Inkjetgoodies it will find plenty of use. Has anyone tried Kayenta
with QTR? I'm sure the Entrada Bright curves would work pretty
well. Has anyone used any others that worked? What adjustment do
you make to account for the extra level of brightness?

Andrew

Kayenta's even brighter than EEM. Amazing. I treat it exactly like EEM
for postcards ...it punchy in small size.

I like Entrada Natural... Kayenta is wrong for proofing it...too much ZAP.

How is the surface on the Moab Entrada paper? Is it as tender and flaky as the Hahnemuhle
textured papers, like Willim Turner and German Etching? I love those papers but you have
to be gentle with them and I always end up spraying mine. I want to try Moab paper. Do
they offer samples? and how is its surface rated for permanence.

Have you used QTR with Kayenta? What curve set did you use?

John,

All the Moab papers I've tested and used flake. It is the old Brightcube
Eclipse Satine coating. They are nice papers, but today, when an increasing
number of companies have figured out how to make non-flaking papers
(PremierArt, PermaJet, Innova, maybe Sterling and others), I see little
reason to fight this problem.

The degree of flaking seems to vary depending on the paper sample one gets.
The sample Kayenta I had was the worst I've used.

Thanks Paul,

You're right. Who needs the extra worry and potential replacement cost. I haven't tried the
Innova media yet either. But I do use Premier Art Hotpress and it is so nice not to have to
treat it like its made of glass.

I really like William Turner and German Etching for their surfaces, color gamut, and dmax
but would like to find a similar textured rag with a more forgiving texture. I would assume
Hahnemuhle is working on that too. They better be. I don't find Photo Rag to be nearly as
tender as the above two mentioned. I rarely have it skuff, but then I hear a lot of people
complaining.
