dual mac.

2001-11-21 by JackG

Hi Trish,
I have been very pleased with it, my first G-4 did not have it, but I'm not
sure I can tell a difference because I have always been a PC person until I
started using photoshop last year. I have photoshop on the PC but I have
never used it.
A friend of mine who is tutoring me on photoshop says the G-4's are so much
faster that it is no comparison to what she had been using in the past.

Re: [Digital BW] dual mac.

2001-11-23 by Robert Morrison

I have a relatively old (now) dual 450 G4 which is much faster at photoshop
than any PC I've worked with. I haven't installed OSX on this machine
yet...but I understand that there are huge performance advantages to be had
on the dual processor machines because of the true multitasking in OSX. The
G5's will be the ultimate wintel slayers...because of true 64bit
architecture. Coupled with OSX there is no reason to use a wintel machine
if you are in graphics or music intensive industries anymore...that
is...unless you want to use Cone's RIP.

Re: [Digital BW] dual mac.

2001-11-24 by Robert Morrison

I don't know for sure...but I would guess that Apple will discontinue the
G4's when the G5's ship. It would make sense if they then put the G4 chip
in iMac's. Honestly, from what I hear about the G5 true 64bit performance
is that it will blaze in comparison to any G4 currently shipping...thus...I
think the best move would be to either:

1) Buy a dual processor G4 when they go on clearance, or
2) Buy an entry level G5

One possible issue with going with the G5's may be needing to buy all new
RAM...my guess is that they will use a new technology chip...if you have
1.5Gb of RAM like me...that might be a selling point for Option #1...where
as long as your RAM is 133mHz...you are in business.

The next huge performance boost for mac users will be when the G5's ship,
coupled with a OSX native Photoshop version...which I understand will be in
the spring.
