Strange happenings with the 4000 and the QuadtoneRIP

2005-03-11 by Steve Schaefer

I am printing with a 4000 on a Mac using QuadtoneRIP 2.1., Premium Luster
roll paper. It has been acting strange lately. It will start to print just fine,
somewhere in the middle it will stop, backup and start to print over the top of
where it already printed. One of the strange things is that it will print a couple
prints normally and then start acting up. I just printed one print twice; the first
one was find the second was not.

Please help, this is driving me crazy.

Thanks

I've had the same experience a couple of times when making QTR prints
on roll paper with my 4000. I don't know why this happens.

Steve, you might try vs. 2.2. I had problems with the 2200 printing--just rolling it through after about 6 prints. The newest version fixed that.

Steve and Carl,

I've had a couple reports of this on Panther 10.3. It seems to be rare but
some people keep getting it. From what I've been able to decipher its a
timing problem in the Panther USB driver. Way back I had a completely
different usb problem with my 7500. I've been using the Jaguar USB driver
on my Panther system because of the 7500 but I also have never had a problem
with the 4000. So I've started suggesting people run the Jaguar USB if they
have problems and it seems to cure it. The Jaguar USB is available on my
website -- just scroll down to Panther USB Error. Download and install it.
If this works for you let me know, I'd like to get more evidence that this
really is a fix.

Roy,

This problem has been very infrequent with my 4000 and I can recall
only two occasions when it has happened, both times on roll paper with
a custom paper size. I'll remember to document the occurrence of this
problem with more data if it should happen again.

My client has almost the same problem on his 4000/Panther but only uses sheet paper.
The 4000 will start printing at the very leading edge of the paper - for about two inches -
then compose itself and begin printing within the normal margins.

It occurs about 5% of the time. It occurs with QTR and it might happen with the Epson
driver but my client uses the Epson driver so little that he isn't totally sure.

I'll install the Jaguar USB fix and see how it goes. Thanks for the info everyone.

Hi Roy,

I would like to confirm that I have also experienced this problem. I
using OS X 10.3.8. Due to requirements of other software I am using,
I am reluctant to move back to earlier USB drivers.

This has only happen once to me while printing on Epson Premium Luster
250 in Rolls. I have only had the RIP for a few weeks.

Other than this problem I am very happy with the results I am getting.

steve

exactly the same things happen to all the time.

you are not alone, I just learn to live with it
although it's annoying.

also, my 4000 refuses single sheets loaded from the
top of the machine... just the paper tray.

There is a post on the 4000 group saying this has happened WITHOUT a RIP!

QTR does not work with Firewire.

Does the problem happen with the Epson driver also?

If it is happening all the time you have nothing to lose by trying the eariler USB driver.

Here's a fairly long winded account of the problem as I know it.

I tend to be leery about suggesting to others about changing "internal" things
in their OS, so I understand your hesitation. However, I think this one is pretty
localized -- I can't be positive but I doubt anything else in your system
uses this particular program. In Jaguar 10.2 a new print system was
introduced called CUPS -- Common Unix Printing System. Only print drivers
that were redone for CUPS use the usb backend driver that I'm talking about.
No other usb devices go through this cups backend.

With CUPS there's one "backend" for each kind of hardware connection.
So there's a usb backend, an ethernet backend etc. The reason you can't
use firewire is that there isn't a firewire backend -- yet, I think Tiger will have
one. The nice thing is that drivers such as QTR don't have to even know what
kind of hardware is used for the connection. With the old way -- Epson still
uses it -- you need a separate driver for each connection.
If anybody's interested the backends are in: /usr/libexec/cups/backend

When Panther came out Apple updated the usb backend and it flat out wouldn't
talk to my 7500 at all. Being an experimenter I tried the old Jaguar usb backend
and lo and behold it worked fine. I reported this to Apple a long time ago but
since the printer is so old I imagine the bug is very low priority for them.
I've never had a problem with my 4000 so I was surprised by the reports of
the printer backing up intermittently. One guy had it consistently enough that
we tested a few things out. The clincher for me was this test:
We made a 5 page print job and saved all the output from QTR in a file. Then
we sent the "raw" file to the printer multiple times. Interestingly, the identical
raw data showed the backup problem on different pages each time. This at
least points to QTR not producing weird commands.

The fact that I never experienced the backup problem suggested that maybe
the Panther usb backend had a problem with the 4000 as well. I've only had
a few people switch back to the Jaguar usb backend but so far it looks like
this is a fix to the problem.
