Epson 4000 for B&W?

Epson 4000 for B&W?

2005-03-23 by welchmatt

I've searched the archives with no hits, so...

I was wondering if anyone here uses the Epson 4000 for B&W only
printing. I'd love to be able to print 16x20. MIS makes mention of
support for UT7 and 4000, but doesn't go into any details, and Paul
Roark's site doesn't mention the 4000 at all.

Are there other alternative for printing sizes larger than the Epson
2200 can handle, but not as big as the 7600?

A couple come to mind...the Epson 3000 and the HP130.

Matt,

I use a 4000 for B/W and color with no problem at all. There's really no need to
dedicate your 4000 to B/W only. Of course you can with Piezography.

I use various approaches including Quadtone RIP, Epson black-only, and narrow
gamut profiles from Eric Bullock at http://www.pixelpusherz.net/

All can give excellent results depending on what you are looking for.

What's the "USP Patch" ... I've been using QTR with a 2200 since it
was released for WXP, and am about to take delivery on a 4000. I've
never heard of this and can't find a reference to it on on the
download page - is this a MAC or Win patch?

USB patch - Mac OS 10.3.x only.
"Download this patch to eliminate the "Printer not responding" error.
This also appears to fix the 4000 problem of misfeeding paper."

This is from Roy.

Its just one file, if you download the usbpatch is tells you which
file. You could save the file first:
in Finder >> Go To Folder and enter /usr/libexec/cups/backend
You'll see a file called usb, you can copy/drag it to a safe place.

Then in the usbpatch you can install the jaguar file (the script does it
you just need to enter you password, note: there's no echo as you type).

This file is only used for printer drivers built on the new print
system --
QTR is the only one I am aware of -- I'm sure the Epson drivers don't
use it.
It's not a per identity file so different idents won't help. I've
been using
this patch for my systems since panther came out.

Matt,

I keep forgetting that there are people out there that don't use Macs. If you are
running a Mac with OSX 10.3.x you don't need to do anything except install QTR and
print.

It works beautifully. QTR only works through a USB port but I'm sure your Mac, if
that's what you are using, has one.

If you aren't running on a Mac, good luck!

Best,

Jim

Yes this patch fixed my client's 4000 misfeeding/printing problem. The printer would
begin printing at the leading edge of the paper and then after an inch or so begin printing
on the proper area of the paper.

Steve,

Apologies. My answer was based on my own experience. I guess I've been lucky. Don't
know why some of us have trouble and other don't even though we are running the same
operating system. I'm on a Powerbook G4. Don't know if that makes a difference.
