Sounds like the one at school has a more recent
version of Adobe Camera Raw. You can download the
latest 2.4 version from adobe.com.

I had the same problem initially and found that I needed to first save the raw file as a tiff or jpeg before being able to work it in PS.

I know this is not exactly on target but I am having a problem with raw
images being accepted in PhotoShop. I have PhotoShop at home and at school
and the one at school works great with my raw files. But my computer at home
every time I try to load one of the raw files PhotoShop just closes or I
get an error message saying it cannot read the file format.

Can anyone help?? I assume it is a setting I must have but since I am using
the same version etc. I can't figure out what is causing this. Any help is
  appreciated.

You may need to download the latest version for the one that won't work. There have been several versions with added cameras for RAW conversion in each one. Just a possibility. I actually use Capture One for RAW conversion but know that others have had to upgrade for various bodies. You do realize that only PSCS (PS8) can actually work with RAW. PS7 had a RAW plugin available for a time (I had it) for $99 but when PSCS came out, it was incorporated into PS. The plugin was never upgraded for any of the newer cameras.

I should add I meant the latest version for PSCS--there was a fairly recent one. This is the Windows download page http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows

Did you say that PS actually closes unexpectedly when you try to open a raw
file? Or is it just the Camera Raw dialog that closes? If the former, it
really sounds like an installation issue (missing DLL, etc.). I'd first try
reinstalling the Camera Raw upgrade, and if that doesn't work, reinstall
Photoshop.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
