OT -- Tucson, AZ

2005-03-25 by Paul Roark

I'm off to Tucson, Arizona next week. Is anyone on top of what B&W
resources or photo ops are best in the area?

I'm, of course, going to try to get to the Center for Creative Photography
(CCP) at the University of Arizona.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

In addition to the Saguarro National Park east and west sections I
found an early AM session at the Tucson Botanical Garden to be
worthwhile when I was there. Etherton Gallery is first rate.

The Catalina highway to Mt. Lemmon takes you through "sky islands".

Also, Tucson Mountain Park and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, between
Tucson and the Saguaro NP West.

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base where there are hundreds of "mothballed"
aircraft stored.

Kartchner Caverns State Park, nine miles south of I-10, off State Hwy 90,
exit 302.

Colossal Cave Mountain Park, east of Tucson on I-10 to exit 279 (the
Vail/Wentworth exit), turn north, and follow the signs for about 7 miles.

The Mission San Xavier del Bac, 1950 W. San Xavier Road, Exit 92 from I-19.

Check www.desertusa.com for wildflower reports.

Probably lots more!

A courageous B&W photographer in Tucson might focus on the people and
their circumstances. Tucson is the center of grim issues that involve
continuing Native American tragedies both on and off their ghettos
(reservations), fascist militias gathering to raise hell, illegal
immigrants in droves, and parasites who take advantage of
illegals...aspects are directly analagous to Mississippi in 1960. And
there's the environment...

I assume you live in the Southwest and are knowledgeable about the area
- or are you just a dolt mouthing political slogans?

Pray tell what does your puerile diatribe have to do with B&W digital
printing?

Calm down, folks. This is an argument that isn't worth having.

By far the best thing about Tucson is the Center. I worked there for 3 years when I was in
school. I used to show the collection to researchers and students. It is an amazing
collecton if you like early American photography through the say 1980's. When most of
the "masters" were still alive. I was there when W.Eugene Smith lived there just before he
died. You need to make an appointment to spend a couple of days and go throught the
archive books. Stiegligz, Weston, Cunningham, Smith, Callahan, Siskind, Curtis, WH
Jackson, Watkins,Muybridge,Caponigro,Gowin,A Adams, Bullock, Sommer, Laughlin much
of the major work of these people are there. And a lot of stuff from the 50's and 60's like
Irving Penn, etc..

You need to see Saguaro National Monument West and SNM East. Drive to Gates Pass
overlooking Old Tucson, the Hollywood western town from a lot of the old movies. And a
drive up Mount Lemon is nice and cool. Sabino Canyon is on the way up there. Then there
is the Biosphere???? Is that thing still there? Alien Creatures.

This page design interface looks like an aol product. I don't like it.

Yes, exactly. AZ is Missippi, 1960, wretched. I spend significant time
among Navajo men and work occasionally at the disposal of a few who
try to escape the influence of simpering racists of both GOP and
Democrat persuasions.

I don't idealize Navajo people, but they are more human than the trash
who look down on them.

I should have mentioned Mafia. *Every single individual* who supports
gambling supports the literal traditional Mafia in AZ. Navajo peoiple
know that. Ask the senator.

...by the way, B&W prints have deep roots in hard reality, as well as
in decorator galleries.

Magnum is far more significant than, say, Ansel.
