Re: [Digital BW] First try of MIS clear cartridges - a disaster

I had the exact same problem although I did use the translucent plugs, I did
withdraw a small amount of ink from each chamber and I did get a good nozzle
check. However, with my first print, large ink drops appeared on the left
portion of the print and smeared nearly halfway across. After hours of
fooling around with it I did a head-cleaning per Paul's instructions. The
same thing happened again. I then installed a refilled UT1 cart and am
getting good nozzle checks and prints with no banding or ink drops. Have
not yet re-installed the spongeless clear cart with UT2 inks after letting
it sit for two days. BTW, I did leave in the spongeless cart with Eboni so
that particular cart was not the problem. Will advise when I re-install the
5 chamber clear cart. Maybe a defective cart?

I have also had a similar problem with my first prints with the new
spongeless cartridges (also my first prints with MIS inks) when printing on
EEM.

After two or three prints with ink stains as Barbara described, I adjusted
the paper thickness setting from the normal paper setting to envelope. I
have not suffered the same problem since.

What's Paul's method of head-cleaning?

As i didn't get the plugs for holes from MIS I used the top part of caps
which came with the syringes. They fit very tightly in the holes so that I'm
sure that no air comes in this way. On the other hand I don't know how I'm
going to remove them :-(
I don't get ink leakes anymore after I have used the caps but I struggle
with clogged nozzles all the time. It goes like this:
nozzle check > many nozzles clogged > cleaning > some nozzles are better but
other new clogged > once again cleaning > perfect nozzle chceck > I print >
the picture comes out perfect at first but then I can see clogged nozzles at
the end of the print.
I don't want to repeat the cleaning right now again as I know that it won't
even be good for a single print. Prior to installing UT2 inks I cleared
thoroughly the parking pad with Windex so that I'm pretty sure that mixed
inks are not an issue. The printer didn't have problems with clogging before
I installed UT2 inks. Please advice what voodoo should I perform to make the
printer work. I'd love to see some perfect prints at last.

Tomek

I saw this show. The imagery is fantastic and well worth a visit - on a
warm day...I froze my butt off in the gallery made from sea containers!!
Try and watch the video - it's even better than the photos.

Wow, what a nice body of work! Thanks for the tip. Biggest questions
in my mind are how he got those shots, and how did he finance 15 years
of world-wide work...

I looked at the web site pretty well but didn't see anything about how
the prints were made - did anyone else see anything about that? Ink?
Emulsion? Steve, you said you saw the show, what did they look like
to you? I would guess ink, being that size and on parchment (whatever
that actually is in this case).

I ordered one of the $30 books - a good buy considering how they are
made.

I especially like the grainy images <g>.

Clayton

Re: First try of MIS clear cartridges - a disaster

2005-04-11 by Nick H. Nugent

Hello Tomek,

I'm still waiting for MIS to make available the
new cartridge design for my printers, but I feel I
must share with you what I know about them.

After reading at the MIS site on the new
cartridge's inner workings, I proceeded to make a
simulation to test out the design. I found that
the initial ink spill is inevitable but will
disappear after a certain amount of printing,
unless the cartridge is primed after refilling
using a bottom fill adapter.

After refilling, there is positive pressure inside
the cartridge. This pressure is relieved either
after some printing or through priming.

About clogging that consistently appears after
some printing, the only explanation that I have is
this thing is called "ink starvation". Why you're
having ink starvation, I do not know.

(Pigment) ink buildup in printhead chambers, and
UT2 maybe a little heavier than what you used to
use? Cartridge has abnormally restrictive air
vent?

Jim who started the "A year of pigment printing -
1280 clogging" thread reported great success using
the MIS flushing liquid.

Good luck,
--nick

Re: [Digital BW] Re: OT - Photo show.

I would have said that they are definitely inkjet on some sort of parchment.
Even the books are printed on the same material - quite unusual (some of the
books were thousands of dollars). I did not see any technical blurb on
their creation. When you see the exhibition you are really quite moved.
While the images are spectacular, for me it was more the interaction between
man and animals which we perceive (and normally they are) as very wild and
dangerous. Back to how they were made, it is interesting to think about the
video. All the still images on display are part of the video - I don't
think they were video stills per se but there is a part in the video
relating to all the still images if you get my meaning and they could well
have been stills. The video was more moving for me than the photos. Really
cool show but pick a warm day to see it!
