I read that article also. It looked like a nice system if it works as easily
and as well as the author said but given its $500+ cost and the need to
dedicate a printer to the Lyson inks (which, IIRC, cost "less than $20 per
cartridge" !!!) I'll stick with QTR and UC inks. I've also heard,
second-hand, reports about poor customer service from Lyson.

Just finished reading the latest Photography Techniques Magazine with a
review of Lyson's Digital Darkroom system which looks like a RIP used
with their ink system. Has anyone actually used it and could you
provide your review and thoughts?

Thanks!

All these Lyson monochrome inksets have unacceptable metamerism. And I
will second the comment about poor customer service in the US. It is almost
nonexistent. Ultrachrome is far superior, however there is bronzing on glossy
papers with it. Lyson being a dye is much better in that regard. But you might
want to look into the MIS Ultratone inks if you want to do that.

There have been a lot of commentary about the digital darkroom on this site .
Just seach the back archives and you will find everything you need to know
from people who have seriously tested them.

John

I am using / learning lyson

2005-04-17 by john_w_peterson

Hello all - my first post in this group...
I have been working on lyson daylight darkroom on an epson 2200,
running off of a Win XP machine. Unfortunately I have had problems
with subltly off color prints - principally a greenish cast and
problems with metamerism.
Lyson tech support had been working with me on the problem, and I
must say they have been trying very hard and are quite helpful.
The long and short of it is that daylight darkroon for the epson
2200 on a mac uses a RIP which is reported to solve these problems,
but on a PC, one is reduced to using profiles and layers in
photoshop. I understand that the improved RIP for the PC will be
soon available and will report back when I have it up and running.
On the plus side, their paper :darkroom gloss, is incredible and
well worth trying.

These are well-noted problems with dyes.

I do seem to recall that the Lyson "system" uses the Bowhaus RIP,
which I think is now out for win XP, so you should be able to get it
now. Retail for the RIP is $250, but I assume that it was included
with your package price, if your package was cheaper than the Mac
version, then it is likely that you will have to pull more money out
of your pocket. You could probably get Quadtone RIP to work with that
ink set, and it is only $50 if you like it enough (shareware).

Checkout the Bowhaus web site. The Lyson RIP is the Bowhaus RIP.
Bowhaus OPM/IJC comes in two version, Mac or PC.
